@dadpad,
He didnt come in today. So we were left talking about local crap and the rainstorm were having.

Life in the slow lane often suffers for topics to discuss

@farmerman,
He tiptoes out of the room so as not to disturb the sleeping Oznians.

@msolga,
Sometimes my jokes work, sometimes they go over like a lead balloon. Humor is a strange thing, even when misspelt. Sometimes i successfully talk funny, other times not so much.

@Setanta,
Sometimes my attempts at humour don't appear to work, either, Setanta. Obviously.
I was attempting to respond too your humour with my humour (If you get my gist). Laughing

Oh damn, I was hoping you'd post more of his utterances for us to interpret for you, farmer!
How very disappointing.
So, is it still raining & hailing today in your parts? Smile

I'm posting Leunig's cartoon here only because I like it.
(For the benefit of o/s folk: there is no deep meaning to be got from it, OK? Apart from the reference to an episode on Monday night television, in which an audience participant of an ABC forum threw his shoe at John Howard.)

Melbourne Cup Day next Tuesday.
Once again, we Melbournians will enjoy this thoroughly well-deserved public holiday, while all the rest of you work. Ah, life is tough sometimes! Smile :

@msolga,
Ah the Melbourne Cup. As a young tacker who travelled on trains a lot I remember well the huge graffito under the bridge near Warwick Farm station:

The Melbourne Cup : Australia's Number One Charity

Deep. Of course on the other side of the bridge closer to Liverpool on the back of one of the racecourses stables was in similarly huge letters was 'Ubaldo's Alcatraz'. Confusing. Who was Ubaldo?

It's always seemed a bizarre excuse for a public holiday to me, too. I think it might have originally been designated a public holiday to accommodate all those absentee workers on Cup Day? I'm not sure.

I'm as confused as you are by that bit of graffiti.
The name of a racehorse, perhaps?

@hingehead,
do men get all dressed up in white linen suits and do women wear really stupid hats for the Melbourne Cup?

@farmerman,
There's lots of frilly frock wearing. From the women too. Many thousands never get out of the carpark.

@msolga,
I always suspect Ubaldo was a strapper - but being such an unusual name I suspected his employment would have been terminated quite quickly....

@farmerman,
Ha.
I'm not sure about the white suits for men, but I will keep an eye out for such details this time, farmer.
Women's apparel though, is quite another thing ...
Yes, lots of fetching "eye-catching hats"! Definitely. Lots of photos of them in the next day's newspapers.
As for the rest, no matter what the weather, rain hail or shine, one must wear one's specially bought "Cup outfit" on the day. (Retailers make a huge killing.) There is a "fashions of the field" contest, even. The competition is extremely fierce, I can tell you! Wink

But I confess I've never attended the Cup myself. Never had the slightest inclination to. The holiday was always been most welcome, though! I'll be at a friends barbecue gathering this coming Tuesday. Lots of such activities will be going on all over the city.
