I recently came back from Dominican Republic. There were reports of a malaria outbreak and was advised to take malaria tablets. I was given Nivaquine - with these, you take 2 tablets as a single dose once a week, you start taking them a week before you go away, whilst you are away and for 4 weeks when you come back. I finished this course of tablets last Tuesday. Since I've been taking these tablets, I haven't had any side effects, except that I have had real trouble getting to sleep at night - sometimes I don't get to sleep until about 5am and then have to get up at 8am!!! Could this be a side effect of the tablets? I've never had sleep problems before.
I suspect sleep troubles could be caused by this drug though Google gives me the side effects as follows:
Itching (pruritus)
Blood disorders
Fits (convulsions)
Visual disturbances
Hair loss (alopecia)
Loss of natural colour of hair
Hearing distubances
Mood changes, strange or abnormal thoughts or depression
Liver disorders
Headache
Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
Skin rashes
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.
