So - what about the new, cheap Mac?

Re: design: but why can't I have BOTH!!!???

You can. The mutual incompatibility with the design is price.

If you pay the premium for the design you can get it on any platform.

A keyboard that plugs into your USB slot (if the plug is round it's not USB).

Craven, the target group for the $99 iPods are children.

All iPods are targeted at children to some extent, and the flash iPods are actually most useful for mobile people of all ages.

My

already for one. $ 299 was too expensive for most parents,
but now, Apple has a niche for them, and considering that
a gameboy costs anywhere from $ 60 to $ 90, the iPod
is priced just right for this age group (11 - 15).

Only as long as they don't ever check other prices.

Apple's products are priced significantly over others, with the hard drive based iPods it made sense because they had value to offer over the others in the form of design and firmware.

With flash players design is less of an issue because any manufacturer can already make it small enough.

So I was hoping for the iPod touch in the form of firmware.

They missed the boat and made something that will merely ride on the coattails of the other iPod's phenominal success.

timber, I thought the same thing: Why didn't they come

satts already said it, the more expensive iPods were already the hits.

Wanna know what's the next big thing from Apple people?

Cell phones.

I'll be very interested, that's something where design is one of the priorities.

Yay!!!! Ok, I admit it - I'm shallow. Beautiful designs are a joy. Like some of the Bang and Olofsun things!!! (I can't afford them either, dammit!)

My professional opinion is that you should have a Mac. You are too cool to have a PC.

Amen, and Macs are great for some segments.

Thing is, I was not talking about non-programmers, to use your analogy I am talking about non-drivers.

Almost right.

Macs are cool, PCs are for business and *nix is for geeks (Headline: Linux Developer gets laid - "This is the third such occurrence for Linux developers since 1991").

Dorks abound for all three platforms.

Cool - and all lonely without the ability to connect = not cool!

(But thank you!!!!)

Lol - me fella is hassling me to get a Mac - which is sort of why I asked about the cheap one - for voice chat purposes, really - and not at all seriously - but I thought it would be an interesting thread. And - I thought I would be able to dazzle him with technical reasons to stop nagging! (And - I am well rewarded)

But a beautiful and very good PC is a thing worth saving for....

Depends on what kind of taste you have.

For small computers like the mini I know of Shuttle but they aren't as small (personally, the size difference isn't important to me in a desktop, why strip down a desk top for a few inches?) and there's the Hoojum Cubit which is a pretty one that's made from a cube of aluminum.

Personally, I like AlienWare's gaming style of computers and their media center computers, but while bowing slightly to design it certainly isn't in the minimalist line that Macs are in.

If you like the "all in one" types then there is Hi-Grade Xperian.

I can't think of any others, people who buy computers for the image generally go with Macs, so the big PC guys out there aren't known for design, just the smaller ones (and I don't buy desktops for design reasons so I don't know too many).

In any case, when it comes to design I'm a fan of apple's stuff and don't think any of the above outshine them.

What's exciting to me with PC's is how easy they've made it to open up the tower and make installations.
My '99 HP was a bitch to work on...20 screws and washers...you know they didn't want you messin in there. The '04 HP has two permanent screws which can be thumb-loosened and the whole side comes off revealing all the guts.
So far I've installed a 256 RAM chip, a 60 gig hard drive, a swifty internal cd writer(the old one broke), and various ethernet and wireless cards. I couldn't imagine doing that on a Mac....who knows?...I ain't no MS certified kind of guy.

You know, Apple is very secretive about schedules of its products. No one could say anything definitely about the products in advance even if one kew them.
(I really do not know anything. I do not want to be sued..)
