Hi
The reference below says that "would have"" is used to refer back to a time in the past from a point of view in the future.
I would like to know in the following sentence which part refers to "the past" and which part refers to "a point of view in the future", please?
We thought they would have got home by five o'clock, but there was no reply when we phoned.

The time in the past is when we phoned. The future is "now", when "we" are speaking of it (Now was the future at that time).

there was no reply = past

they would have gotten home = view of the future
