I am thinking about purchasing a 2001 Jetta GLS TDI fully loaded for 14,995.00 Canadian with 107,000 kms on it. This is an original owner car.

Can anyone comment on these cars as to the reliablity and cost of repairs. I know they get great gas mileage but the money saved on fuel will it be used maintaning this car? Are there any drawbacks to these cars?
Thanks, jhb

Theres not much to maintain on a diesel engine. I have owned two VW Rabbit diesels, a 1986 Jetta diesel and
currently own a 1996 Passat diesel. The Passat looks very new, in and out. It has 250,000 miles on it. I believe that's over 400,000 kilometers. Brake pads, tires, etc. But no clutch, no overhaul.

To be honest, the engine is what is called an interference engine. I failed to have the timing belt changed within the recommended miles. It broke and the bill for new valves, head, etc. ran $1,900. However, that comes out to seven tenths of one cent per mile. I can live with that.

Most of what you'll hear is a list of "problems' owning a diesel. None of them are true. Dlesel fuel is very available.
Won' start in cold weather. our diesel lives outside and starts at below zero. Ten below this winter. Diesels don't accelerate - not like a sports car , but adequet. The diesel you are considering has 90 horse power. But it creates 145 foot pounds of torque at about 2,700 rpm's.

I use fully synthetic 5-30 weight oil year round.

Thanks, I have heard alot of good things about the TDI and from looking at the newer Jetta's they seem really well built cars and solid.

The timing belt on this car was changed at 85,000kms so it should be good for a while yet. Check out this website and click on current models then look for the car 2001 Jetta GLS TDI and let me knowwhat you think.

Your TDi is a great engine and should give great economy and reliability also i run 1 in Scotland and we get very cold tempratures it starts no problem and returns 45 50 mpg imperial gals ie 8 pints to a gal great cars over 40% cars (automobles) sold are diesel cars in Europe due to the expensive fuel costs it is like £4.25 per gal for fuel the excange rate is something like $1 = £1.85 so the fuel is very expensive in Europe about $8 a gal in the Uk but you have no spark plugs or electrics distributor etc to go wrong cheaper servicing in the uk for diesel cars and Less emissions
