There is a boat 4m in length and mass 225 kg in still waters. a child at one end skids in the boat and slips to the water. seeing this the father at the other end runs with constant speed towards the child. If fathers mass is 75 kg how far would he be from where the child slipped?

Probably 4/3 metres, ftom equating the father's momentum with boat's momentum giving the relative velocities of 3:1 (father:boat).

The suggested answer given in the book is 1 m.

In that case it looks like we should use the combined mass of man+boat giving a ratio of velocities 4:1 (man alone:man +boat).
