A drink to match every food

A French teacher told me: "Poisson, sans bon vin, c'est poison"

(Fish, without good wine, is poison)

So, Fish is traditionally accompanied by white wine: maybe a Sancerre, or other Sauvignon Blanc. Perhaps a Vinho Verde in Portugal or a Pinot Grigiot in Italy.

Other dishes require other drinks - caviar and vodka? cucumber sandwiches and tea? strawberries and champagne?

And the old chestnut - what to drink with chocolate? I think gin & Tonic works quite well - no wonder it's known as "mother's ruin!"

I'm preferring a light red wine with pasta, for instance a Refosco from Friaul. Beer with nuts! Two-legged nuts, or in a shell...

If I'm serving a meat-appetizer and fish for main course, I serve a nice rose' first, and then I go for a nice Vernaccia with the fish.

Gautam,

Curry and Lager is certainly traditional here! I quite like a slightly more authentic Vegetarian Thali and a sweet lassi!

JerryR,

Great list of possibilities. I like a sweet wine with fois gras (eg Sauternes), which is more traditional in France.

More ideas:

Cantuccini with Vin Santo
Oysters with Guinness
Cookies with milk
Fondue with Kirsch (or another schnapps!)

and how could I forget:

Stilton with port

Chardonnay with brie and sourdough. Then Zinfandel with tri-tip. The 49ers tailgate special.

I don't know what tri-tip is - what am I missing in dreary London?

Tri-tip is a cut of sirloin that is kinda triangular, like a deflated American football. Slow cooked over a wood fire, then sliced across the grain - usually served with salsa, rice and beans.

I like good chocolate with good red wine. Oh, Sjaak's Belgian chocolate with a Rosemount Shiraz..(not your greatest red, but good for a glass at the end of the work day).

Calvados with anything, perhaps roast pork..

Single malt scotch and a smoked fish, oh, say the smoked alaskan salmon my friend brings back when she visits her mother there, best smoked salmon I have ever had.

Stir fried crablegs w/curry and cold TsingTao.

Man, that sounds good, particularly to someone who is in the middle of a great housecleaning and who will collapse soon with a glass of mediocre wine and a spinach salad. You guys live high on the hog!

Chianti, even the cheap stuff, tastes good with fish or chicken as well as meat.

And, a Tsingtao always is tasty with Chinese food. Also, there wasa bar in my home town that served a really salty Feta salad that would taste like perfection with Budweiser.
