Discontinuity in three way switch travelers

I have two - three way switches that control three fluorescent lights in a garage. The lights stopped working. Checked everything including replacing the switches with no luck. I had no continuity on the travelers. I removed them from the switches and wired romex to each switch through the garage and lights worked.
It seems odd that the wires would be broken in the wall all of a sudden. Any ideas where this could be messed up? Thanks in advance!!
