No, but the moment turned into a love-affair. Not a bad trade-off.

Well, the most impressive moment (actually 'moments', since this happened quite often) was, when I travelled with Germany's then biggest cruising agency (Federal Navy Pleasure Lines .. or similar it was called  ) -
well the really most impressing moments were when coming out of a foggy night to a clear coastline in the morning sun. (Not only the white cliffs of Dover, but especially there!)

"Single" is an impossible task. There are just too many places in this world that I treasure with good memories. If I tried to list the places with special memories, everybody will be bored to tears. Wink c.i.

Let me give you some idea why it's impossible. In my travels, I have been to Mt Everest, the highest point on earth; the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth; and Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world. All three places hold special memories for me. They are all different with a different landscape, people, travel mates, climate, and the experience. We flew to Mt Everest. We rode a bus to the Dead Sea. I was on a cruise to visit Ushuaia. c.i.

Man. One.

Hmmm...

Sitting down on top of Mt. Whitney?
Driving into Joshua Tree at midnight and scrambling up boulders by moonlight?
Meeting the puffins outside the 1400-year-old beehive huts on Greater (or Lesser...) Skellig (Ireland)?
Walking out of my hotel in Corinth and not stopping until I'd set foot in the doorway of the Akro(ancient)corinth?
Leaning back into the wind rushing toward the setting sun at Lake Mead?
Tented thunderstorms at Guitar Lake, Grand Canyon, Monterey Bay?
"Le Deluge" at the Louvre? The Van Gogh Museum (tears there, fer sure)?
The Aug. 1 fireworks in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland?
Standing in the wind and rain in a meadow over Santa Cruz with the other half of my monkey-pair, us out for a couple of days from the Midwestern frozen drear?

Crikey, I dunno, but I'm itchin' to go somewhere now...

Probably the most memorable, actually, was wandering off from my pack on a solo trek and then spending about two hours looking for it...

A lot of us have travelled to a lot of places. Listing them is pretty boring, but there must have been a couple of absolute standouts, or why bother? I don't travel to "tick off" places (or people, for that matter! Confused )

I've mentioned a couple of mine, but, to keep the forum interesting, and us entertained, why not talk about one place that affected you. I'm talking about WONDER, not "seen this".

edit. I've not been to Ushaia and I suspect most haven't. Why don't you tell us about that?

I love being at sea - there's just nothing like it (after I've stopped hurling my food in all directions!). The stars are just amazing, and watching the sun come up is a fantastic sight! And there's the fish, and the dolphins and the whales.

I'm not too sure of the routes of "FNPL" Confused Question

PD - what a life - so many memories to savour Laughing

Lilk K - Yep good fun Very Happy

"Wonder," that's what I thought I was talking about. I have great difficulty in picking one or two places that I feel are 'special,' and are 'standouts' with special significance. I'm one of those curious creatures that seems to find something special in all the places I visit. ** When my nephew asked to me take his mother on a trip about two years after her husbands death, I suggested Egypt for several reasons. One of the major one being that the pyramids is the last of the seven wonders of the world still in existence. The history going back five thousand years can still be experienced by visitors to Egypt. The Cairo museum, the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, Abu Simbel and Ramses II's temples, and Aswan, one of the most beautiful of cities in Egypt. On our trip, we stayed at the hotel next to the pyramids, and our room balcony had a view of them. We took a night train down from Cairo to Aswan. We rode on feluccas, and sailed up the Nile from Aswan to Luxor in a new boat. After our tour of Egypt, we visited Jordan for four days, and visited the Dead Sea and Petra, the pink, rock city. When we visited the archaeological museum in Amman, we were able to see some of the Dead Sea Scrolls. We also visited the Roman theater in downtown Amman, and our tour guide took us to a bakery where we purchased some baklava. These are only the highlights, but they are places which remains in my memory with special experiences. I still communicate with our Egypt tour guide. She is very special, because he invited our whole tour group to her wedding, and promised to put us up at her place if we attended her wedding. She married an Itanlian man last summer. Shereen became a tour guide, because when her parents took her for a visit to Cairo when she was 12 years old, she immeidately decided to become a tour guide. She went to university in Cairo, and have been going to school ever since to increase her knowledge in Egyptology. I also still communicate with the tour guide I had on my first visit to Egypt over five years ago. When he visited in our area on a lecture tour several years ago, I was able to give him a short tour of Sausalito and San Francisco. We have exchanged Christmas cards ever since I met him on my tour. My memories are many, and all are special. c.i.

Actually happened while travelling through the SW with my mother of all things...really, it was starting to get to me that every visit we would drive for miles and miles of nothingness to all of a sudden come up on something interesting, a few really pretty places, some quiet breath taking.
The one where we drove up to four corners is it though.
magical.
We arrived there at nightfall, dang dark out there I tell ya. All I noticed was crossing a bridge and some lights on the water. Got into the motel, quant, quiet little place. Okay. Grand. Bed, wheres the bed..Ive seen the Grand Canyon, painted desert, petrified forest, and monument valley...Im in sensory overload.
Well, the sun is up and so am I...going on out moms, briinging the camera for the sunrise, see what I can see.
Not much from the windows...we were facing the road.
Well, little miss has no idea where she laid her head almost fell to the ground when she rounded the corner.
Lake Powell at sunrise. My first thought was, humm...didnt know there was another Grand Canyon that flooded..this is wild.
Mom snuck up behind me "What do you think?" Well, I was speachless and non-picture taking just in quiet still magic for a long while. Then Mom said, "you're loosing your light" and walked away.
The day she planned ended up being an all day boat tour of the Lake, and those quiet canyons, reflections of the water, the tranquility and the beauty stunned me.

Sigh.... Lake Powell is magic. Did you get into the water? I could see my toes stretched all the way down - like looking through rippled glass.

Lake Powell sounds wonderful - and such beauty, when unexpected, is always a joy!

I can recall arriving quite late at some small berg in Austria and crashing into a hotel. The next morning I woke up, pulled back the blinds, and was bowled over by the spectacular scenery - I had no idea what to expect - this was just a stop on a traipse from one side of Europe to the other to catch friends. No-one warned me it was so beautiful Laughing

Hi margo!

Hmmm, quite a few (& none too recent! )Sad Crying or Very sad
Here's one perfect moment:

The joy of waking up in an el cheapo hotel in Florence ... Only to open the shutters to discover a busy, busy square full of people. (I'd bombed out & slept for some thing like 10 hours after booking into the hotel, the night before ..) The sun was shining, bells were ringing, people looked so happy! Florence at last!!! Very Happy

I recall quite vividly crashing at midnight in a motel in the middle of America with no idea where I was and waking up and seeing nothing but corn in all four directions. Ugh. Not so special.

(Lake Powell, eh? Hmmmmmmmmm...........)

quinn, Remember that movie, Room With a View? There were some travel magazines that used that as a source for some of their travelogues and recommendations for hotels. I've had the pleasure of having some hotel rooms with great views, and I guess if one travels enough, you're bound to find a few. c.i.
