Thelma Ritter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thelma Ritter (February 14, 1902 - February 4, 1969) was an Oscar-nominated American character actress of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

Early life

Ritter was born in Brooklyn, New York. After appearing in high school plays and stock companies, she trained as an actress at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She followed a stage career until taking a hiatus to raise a family, then resumed her career on radio in the early 1940s.

Career

Ritter's first movie role was in Miracle on 34th Street (1947). Throughout her career, Ritter was nominated for an Academy Awards six times but has never received one.

She is perhaps best known today for her roles as James Stewart's nurse in Rear Window and as Bette Davis's devoted maid in All About Eve. The latter, especially, showcases Ritter's expert comic timing and deft way with a barbed line.

Death

Shortly after a 1968 performance on The Jerry Lewis Show, Ritter suffered a heart attack which eventually proved fatal. She was 10 days shy of her 67th birthday.

Florence Henderson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Florence Agnes Henderson (born February 14, 1934 in Dale, Indiana as one of 10 children in a Roman Catholic tobacco farmer's household) is an American actress and singer best known for playing the role of "Carol Brady" in the television program The Brady Bunch, which ran from 1969 to 1974.

Florence Henderson graduated from St. Francis Academy in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1951; shortly thereafter, she went to New York City, enrolling in the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Henderson started her career on the stage, performing in musicals, such as the touring production of Oklahoma! and South Pacific at Lincoln Center. She debuted on Broadway in Wish You Were Here in 1952, and later starred in such notable shows as Fanny (1954), and The Girl Who Came to Supper (1963). In 1962 she won the Sarah Siddons Award for her work in Chicago theatre.

Her most widely seen role was as Carol Brady in The Brady Bunch which was produced from 1969 until 1974. A worldwide success, it continues to be screened in many countries through syndication.

Henderson was also the spokeswoman for Wesson cooking oil, from 1976 to 1996. During that time, she hosted a cooking show on TNN called Country Kitchen. Today, she is the spokeswoman for Polident denture cleanser (although she does not wear dentures herself). In 2003, Henderson seemed to poke fun at her wholesome image by appearing in a Pepsi Twist television commercial with Ozzy Osbourne.

She is the mother of four children, none of whom have entered show business. Henderson has also appeared with her TV children whenever the opportunity comes about. For instance, she appeared on the reality-television series My Fair Brady starring Christopher Knight.

Gregory Hines
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregory Oliver Hines (February 14, 1946 - August 9, 2003) was an American actor, singer, and dancer, regarded by many as the greatest tap dancer of his generation, and one who transcended the stage.

Born in New York City, Hines learned tap dancing as a toddler from his older brother Maurice. When Hines was five years old, he and his brother began dancing professionally, most notably at the Apollo Theater, in Harlem.

Hines appeared in such movies as The Cotton Club, White Nights, Running Scared, and Tap. On television, he starred in his own series in 1997 called The Gregory Hines Show, as well as in a recurring role as Ben Doucette on Will & Grace.

He earned Tony Award nominations for Eubie, Comin' Uptown and Sophisticated Ladies. Hines won a 1992 Tony for the musical Jelly's Last Jam. He also sang a memorable duet with the late Luther Vandross titled "There's Nothing Better Than Love" in 1986.

Hines died of liver cancer at the age of 57 in Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death, he was engaged to bodybuilder Negrita Jayde.

In 1990, Hines was with an idol of his, Sammy Davis, as the great entertainer lay dying of throat cancer, unable to speak. After Davis died, a choked-up Hines told the press of how Sammy had made a gesture to him, "as if passing a basketball... and I caught it." It is not known if Hines was able to pass the ball on to anyone, though some people consider Savion Glover, who studied under Hines, may be a suitable contender.

Renée Fleming
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American soprano Renée Fleming (born February 14, 1957) is a leading opera singer.

Fleming was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Rochester, New York. Both her parents were voice teachers.

She studied music education at the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York at Potsdam. While at SUNY-Potsdam, she took up singing with a jazz trio in an off-campus bar. The jazz saxophonist Illinois Jacquet invited her on tour with his big band, but she chose instead to continue with graduate studies at the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music and Juilliard.

Fleming's first major break came in 1988 when she sang the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro at the Houston Grand Opera. In 1989, she made debuts with the New York City Opera and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 1991, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut. In 1997, Fleming sang her first Manon at the Opéra Bastille to glowing reviews.

As a youngster, Fleming enjoyed popular music and admired the talent of Joni Mitchell and others. In addition to the standard operatic repertoire, she performs new music, Broadway show tunes, and other popular genres.

Fleming sang in the world première of John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles with the Metropolitan Opera, in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's first performances of Floyd's Susannah, and as Blanche in the world première of André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire, with the San Francisco Opera.

Popular music recordings

When the store manager returned from lunch, he noticed his clerk's hand was bandaged.
Before he could ask about the bandage, the clerk said he had some very good news for him.
"Guess what, sir?" the clerk said. "I finally sold that terrible, ugly suit we've had so long!"
"Do you mean that repulsive pink and blue double-breasted thing?" the manager asked.
"That's the one!"
"That's great!" the manager cried, "I thought we'd never get rid of that monstrosity!
That had to be the ugliest suit we've ever had! But tell me, why is your hand bandaged?"
"Oh," the clerk replied, "after I sold the guy that suit, his guide dog bit me."

Well, listeners, that dog joke signals the end of Bob's bio's. Thanks Boston, and we can never tell about them German POLICE. <smile>

When we lived in Virginia, the gas meter reader man called me and said that he couldn't read the meter 'cause he was "....drove off by a big German police....". That shepherd was not even ours, but I gave him a doggy biscuit for being intelligent.

One of my favorite James Bond themes by Carley Simon:

The Spy Who Loved Me Theme
Songs and Lyrics

Nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you.
Baby, you're the best.

I wasn't lookin' but somehow you found me.
I tried to hide from your love light,
But like heaven above me the spy who loved me
Is keepin' all my secrets safe tonight.

And nobody does it betterSongs
Though sometimes I wish someone could.
Nobody does it quite the way you do.
Did you have to be so good?

The way that you hold me whenever you hold me.
There's some kind of magic inside you
That keeps me from runnin' but just keep it comin'
How'd you learn to do the things you do?

And nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you.
Baby, baby, darlin' you're the best.

Lyrics Carole Sager
Music Marvin Hamlisch

Well, Bob, Those things will be floating around for some time to come, I suppose, but they do give us a chuckle.

Didn't I see somewhere on the news, that even the white house was laughing? I smell a conspiracy.

All in All Song
Album: "Armed Love" by International Noise Conspiracy

I see the faces everywhere I wanna see them all, and I see the monikers written on the wall
starts like an echo turns into a roar, the sound of silence never heard before
we meet them everyday, the ones that gives us strength to make it possible all in all, all in all
to find it right here, it's nothing new, to find it right here within all we do
stories have been spoken struggles we've been through, look at these history to see what we can do
to get together we're still learning how, the times are changing and our time is now
we meet them everyday, the ones that gives us strength to make it possible all in all, all in all
to find it right here, it's nothing new, to find it right here within all we do
it's time to hold on, it's time to reach out...
to find it right here, it's nothing new, to find it right here within all we do
it's time to hold on, it's time to reach out...

Odd conspiracy, no?

Hey, London. I read that bit on the web. More of the government interfering in our personal lives, right? As I have said a zillion times, listeners, it's really not about smoking, it that old "foot in the door."

I just got off the telephone ,after having been put on hold for one hour, with the SS folks. One nice lady gave me all the wrong information, and the other took forever to process the information that I gave her. Rolling Eyes

So, Brit, are you surprised?

I can't support this, folks, but some time back I read that the government may be trying to forbid people to smoke in their own homes if there are children.

A reminder to all you smokers out there:

Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette Lyrics

Willie Nelson

Now I'm a fellow with a heart of gold with the ways of a gentleman I've been told
A kind of a fellow that wouldn't even harm a flea
But if me and a certain character met that guy that invented the cigarette
I'd murder that son of a gun in the first degree
That ain't that I don't smoke myself and I don't reckon they'll injure your health
I've smoked 'em all my life and I ain't dead yet
But nicotine slaves are all the same at a pheasant party or a poker game
Everythin's gotta stop when they have that cigarette
Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette puff puff puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St Peter at the Golden Gate that you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette

Now at a game of chance the other night ol' Dame Forson wasn't doin' me right
Them kings and queens just kept on comin' round
Well I got a full and I bet it high but my plug didn't work on a certain guy
He just kept a risin' and a layin' that money down
He's raise me and I'd raise him I sweated blood I had to sink or swim
He finally called and he didn't raise the bet
I said ace is full pal how about you he said I'll tell you in a minute or two
But I just gotta have another cigarette
Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette...
[ guitar - steel ]
The other night I had a date with the cutest gal in the fifty states
A highbred uptown social little dame
She said she loved me and it seemed to me that things were like they oughta be
So hand in hand we strolled down Lover's Lane
She was oh so far from a chunk of ice and our smoochin' party was a goin' real nice
So help and I think I'd've been there yet
But I give her a hug and a little squeeze and she said Willie excuse me please
But I just gotta have another cigarette
Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette...
Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette...
Just gotta have another cigarette

A young Donovan, on the cover of his Catch the Wind album.

_______________________________________________

Fresh Air from WHYY, October 7, 2005 · Singer Donovan Leitch is known best by his first name alone. He has a new box set, Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan It's a remastered CD/DVD set which covers his work from 1964 to 2004.

"Catch the Wind."

Donovan, 58, grew up in Glasgow, Scotlan, before moving to the United States, where he became part of the groovy San Francisco scene in the late 1960s.

Despite dropping out of the music business for most of the 1990s, Donovan recorded an album in 1994 with producer Rick Rubin. Donovan has been attributed with coining the phrase "Flower Power" -- but he says he owes it all to beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Last year when Terry talked to him, Donovan's released his first album in 8 years, Beat Cafe.

Hey, P.S. Thanks for the ability to hear Donovan. Will turn him on in just a sec.

Tex Williams, Nick? My word, I certainly did not know that, buddy. I'll withhold my comment on his having died of lung cancer, as Letty doesn't know Tex Williams.

Tryagain, I'm waiting for someone to try and sell us on that bag of excrement. Love it, buddy.

"LA CUCARACHA "

memories !
we had to have a second foreign language - in addition to english - to get our highschool gaduation certificate. since we had only two years to graduation, it was decided that spanish would be the easiest language to 'master' ???
so there i was, riding the subway, the streetcar, courting the future mrs h , and all the while reciting spanish words, learning new ones and humming
"LA CUCARACHA " since i never had to use spanish , there isn't much more left except "LA CUCARACHA "
should come in handy during our travels in chile in march .
example : 'do you have any CUCARACHAS in your hotel ? ' . should go over well, don't you think ?
adios ! hbg
