Okay, this may come across as odd...

For one thing, the singer is almost literally born yesterday.

For another, those two French songs require some understanding of the original text to fully appreciate. The lyrics are really good... Though the music is nice enough. You'll recognise the theme of the first song linked below, written by Claude François and translated in English as My Way (Sinatra, Elvis).

The main oddity though, is that this is from a TV show like Britain Has Talent or American Idol, called Nouvelle Star (New Star)... I apologize for the faux pas in advance... Smile I don't usually watch these things but my wife does and in this season, there's a fantastic girl, Yseult, which does an absolute killing. I just love her voice. Here she is:

@Letty,
Well, edgar, don't know if this will work or not, but I'm going to say goodnight now with two versions of the same song.

@edgarblythe,
good night to all listeners of WA2K Radio - with a tribute to :

Robert Merrill "Largo al factotum" Il Barbiere di Siviglia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNPS6AV1U14

Quote:
Relatively late in his singing career, Merrill also became known for singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Yankee Stadium and Giants Stadium. He first sang the national anthem to open the 1969 baseball season, and it became a tradition for the Yankees to bring him back each year on Opening Day and special occasions. He sang at various Old Timer's Days (wearing his own pinstriped Yankee uniform with the number "11⁄2" on the back) and the emotional pre-game ceremony for Thurman Munson at Yankee Stadium on August 3, 1979, the day after the catcher's death in a plane crash. He would also sing at one World Series game in each year the Yankees played the Fall Classic at the stadium, starting in 1976. A recorded Merrill version is sometimes used at Yankee Stadium today.

Merrill preferred a traditional approach to the song devoid of additional ornamentation, as he explained to Newsday in 2000, "When you sing the anthem, there's a legitimacy to it. I'm extremely bothered by these different interpretations of it." Merrill appeared as himself in a cameo role, singing the national anthem, in the 2003 film Anger Management. Merrill joked that an entire generation of people know him as "The 'Say-Can-You-See' guy!"

Thanks to all of you for your help. Love having our Frenchman with us and, of course, the rest of you. Had a lot of trouble connecting today but now, I'm happy. Razz

Incidentally, y'all, I think that our pushman knows that it was not Beethoven, but Tchikovsky that did the retreat music. The Russians defeated the French by retreating and then Napoleon and his army had to retreat.

Another song that is great by Glenn:

I don't think of this Glenn Campbell recording as strictly a Christmas song.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks again for your comment, edgar. I had no idea that Glenn did No Place Like Home.

Anyone remember this guy? Today is his birthday.

Oops, I missed your contribution, pushman. Loved that one, Brit. I think you missed Matt Monroe, too. Welcome back.
