saying good night and wishing a happy birthday to :

Quote:
Malcolm B. Wiseman (born May 23, 1925), better known as Mac Wiseman, is an American bluegrass singer, nicknamed The Voice with a Heart. The bearded singer is one of the cult figures of bluegrass.

Born in Crimora, Virginia, he studied at the Shenandoah Conservatory in Dayton, Virginia -- before it moved to Winchester, Virginia in 1960 -- and started his career as a disc jockey at WSVA-AM in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

His musical career began as upright bass player in the band of country singer Molly O'Day. When Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs left Bill Monroe's band, Wiseman became the guitarist for their new band, the Foggy Mountain Boys. Later he played with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. After a performance on Louisiana Hayride he became popular as solo artist. In the 1950s, he was the star of The Old Dominion Barn Dance on WRVA in Richmond, Va.

During the folk revival in the 1960s, Wiseman had successful concerts at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall.

Aloha. Ms. Letty, the 'smooth jazz' video you played had a tune I played earlier for the letter Q, "Killer Joe" by Quincy Jones, which I wouldn't categorize as "smooth jazz", but it's great regardless of category.

Today's selections represent the letters V & W, and I don't mean volkswagen. First up is Sassy, the divine Sarah Vaughan, at the Apollo where she won the talent contest. At the conclusion, there's a touching duet with Mr. B, Billy Eckstine, her first employer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9pGmOUUwho

Next, a lovely duet with Art Tatum & Ben Webster on "Have You Met Miss Jones": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOFNArn8DpM

Tomorrow, I will attempt letters XYZ. For X, all I can come up with is Xavier Cugat, but I'm not even sure if Senor Cugat should be categorized as a jazz musician so I'm open to suggestions. Question

Good late afternoon from here in Florida to all of our contributors.

Wish I could acknowledge each song, but suffice it to say I listened and loved them all.

hbg, I was stunned when you mentioned the Old Dominion Barn Dance. My cousin Billy and his sister Arlene played there. Billy died and Arlene has lost her vision. I never hear from my cousin Pat any more. Liked your Beaver song, too.

yitwail, sorry I didn't make the connection with Quincy and Killer Joe. Loved The Nearness of You and Body and Soul by those great vocalists. Have You Met Miss Jones is one of my favorites.

Neco, Loved The Most Beautiful Girls in the World by Charlie.

edgar, Don't know that one by The Fab Four. It was great.

Annie, you are so welcome here as is your dad.

This is the song that I played with Billy when I was in Virginia and he played violin.

We'll never really know about Walt Disney as many rumors have been spread concerning the man, but here is a medley of his songs by the fabulous Babs.

and, for our honu.

Many, many thanks to all of you for keeping our radio station on the air.

Mahalo for the nice video, I never saw it before. Clark Terry is one of the greats, of course. There are so many jazz greats, I barely scratch the surface with my selections.

And kudos to hbg for all the Xavier Cugat music. I'll just leap to the letter Y tomorrow.

Good evening listeners.

I hope you've had a good week with the regular team.

I'll be sitting in briefly.

How about something romantic to sing along with?

Aram Khachaturian (Armenian: Արամ Խաչատրյան; Russian: Ара́м Ильи́ч Хачатуря́н)[Note 1] (June 6 [O.S. May 24] 1903 – May 1, 1978) was a Soviet Armenian composer.[1] Alongside Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich, Khachaturian is sometimes called one of the three "titans" of Soviet music.[2] Khachaturian's works were often influenced by classical European music and Armenian folk music.[3][4]

Born in Tiflis (Georgia) to a poor Armenian family from Nakhichevan (Azerbaijan), Khachaturian moved to Moscow at the age of 19. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1934.

Khachaturian is famous for the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from his ballet Spartacus, and for the "Sabre Dance" from his ballet Gayane and the adagio from the same ballet, much used in films and TV series around the world.
