@hamburgboy,
hbg, Love that song When You're Smiling. Thanks for the info on Hucko. That answers yitwail's question on musical instruments and vocalists, right?

Another birthday gal, but first some info.

Janis Ian (born Janis Eddy Fink, April 7, 1951) is an American songwriter, singer, musician, columnist and science fiction author. Ian first entered the folk music scene while still a teenager in the mid-sixties; most active musically in that decade and the 1970s, she has continued recording into the 21st century. She has won two Grammy Awards, the first in 1975 for her song "At Seventeen", and the second in 2013 for Best Spoken Word Album, for her autobiography, Society's Child (nearly 40 years later).

msletty , ed and all other listeners to WA2K Radio !

here is another great jazz musician who has a birthday today :

Quote:
Frederick Dewayne "Freddie" Hubbard (April 7, 1938 – December 29, 2008)[1] was an American jazz trumpeter. He was known primarily for playing in the bebop, hard bop and post bop styles from the early 1960s and on. His unmistakable and influential tone contributed to new perspectives for modern jazz and bebop.[2]

@hamburgboy,
hbg, you just touched a nerve with me. How dear of you to dedicate a moon song to me. Love Blue Moon.

Loved Freddy's Here's That Rainy Day Again, and Art Blakey and Freddy doing Lester Left Town were both wonderful.

So long ago in New York, met Art Blakey and still have the old photo.

Another birthday guy with his partner. It's John Oates.

Ms. Letty,

Always nice to visit. I remembered one more trumpeter who sang:

Freddie Hubbard, great as he was, didn't sing that I know of.

@yitwail,
Ah, honu, I'm not certain about Freddie either.

Love This Guy's in Love With you by Herb Alpert. Sad about Richard and Karen.

Here's a group that played all their own instruments and sang great a capella, too

today is Ravi Shankar's birthday ( did we already feature him ? ).

Quote:
Ravi Shankar , KBE (Bengali: রবি শংকর, IPA: [ˈrɔbi ˈʃɔŋkɔr]; 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012), often referred to by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician and composer who played the sitar. He has been described as the best-known contemporary Indian musician.[2]

Shankar was born in Varanasi and spent his youth touring Europe and India with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.

@edgarblythe,
Trombone Shorty and the Orleans Ave band

I love this guy and his band to death. hee's multi-talented musical whiz kid (26 or 27). I've seen him in person the year before at Clearwater Jazz Festival. If I have to sell one of my kidneys, I'm going to see him perform in about 10 days in St Pete/Tampa festival.

Here's Shorty doing his virtuoso best on trumpet on Youtube. he also plays excellent trombone. This cut is St. James Infirmary. take note of his amazing technique .... incredible circular breathing.

edgar, hurry back. Abstract nouns need to be defined. Redneck can mean poor white trash, cracker, etc.

hbg, it's easy to compliment you as you are a gentleman and a scholar. Razz

Love both version of Ravi Shankar, Ontario.

Ragman, Welcome back, and St. James Infirmary by Trombone Shorty and Booker T were both good. Actually, the baby that is referred to in the song, was a really child who had died at birth, and the man was remembering her.

Another birthday, but first some info.
