edgar, I know Is you is or is you ain't my baby, but the melody sung by Buster Brown was different.

Glad you came back, euro. Van Morrison must have done his magic.

Ah, Love Dame Shirley Bassey. The Girl from Tiger Bay was great.

Another birthday guy, but first some info.

William December Williams, better known as Billy Dee Williams (born April 6, 1937), is an actor.

His first big break was in the acclaimed Brian's Song in which he played Gale Sayers. His next hit came in 1973 when he played Louis McKay in Lady Sings the Blues.

I like this one by him and Diana, y'all.

@edgarblythe,
Like that one by Burl Ives, edgar. Don't know Mary Ann Regrets, however.

So long ago, I remember asking Stoat about the lyrics of this song and he told me.

Found it now.

msletty , ed and all other listeners to WA2K Radio !

we have another musical birthday to celebrate :

Quote:
Joan Carlyle is a Welsh opera singer (born 6 April 1931 Wirral, Cheshire).

After studying singing with Madame Nicklass Kempner, Joan Carlyle auditioned for the Royal Opera House and was put under contract by music director Rafael Kubelík and made her debut in 1955. She became one of the principal English-speaking singers who emerged at Covent Garden in the 1950s and became an established member of the Covent Garden Opera Company.
...
While often being paired with Jon Vickers, conductor and music director Rudolf Kempe was a powerful influence and nurtured her career. It was with Kempe that she had her first successes in the 1958/1959 season as “Sophie” in Luchino Visconti’s production of Der Rosenkavalier , and then as “Micaela” in Carmen.
...

In her first recording, she is featured as "The Voice From Heaven" in a Decca release of Verdi's Don Carlo in June/July 1965 with the ROH Orchestra conducted by Solti. Featured singers include Carlo Bergonzi, Renata Tebaldi, Grace Bumbry, Nicolai Ghiaurov, and Martti Talvela.
...

Now retired, she lives in Wales and teaches singing privately. Also, she has taught master classes and workshops at such institutions as the Royal College of Music in London.

Swingin by WA2K with one of the all-time great trumpet+vocal performances by Bunny Berigan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2BuWDhuT2I

aside to Ms. Letty, why are there so many trumpeters who sang, but few if any saxophonists? Besides Berigan, there's Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Chet Baker, and Hugh Masekela off the top of my head.

@edgarblythe,
I didn't know Sal Mineo could drum like that.

Since I mentioned him earlier, here's an uplifting tune by Hugh Masekela:

hbg, Loved Joan's Senza Mamma; Jon's Comfort Ye My People and especially Necola's Handel. Stompin Tom's Ketchup was also a goodie.

Yitwail, Welcome back. You know how I enjoy Bunny's I Can't Get Started. Also enjoyed Hugh's Bring It on Home, honu.

I need to check out folks who both played instruments and sang. You mentioned some of them. I recognized oahu because when I was a kid, we did ukelele hulas. What fun. "..here's to Letty and the way she does the hula..." Believe it or not, I can still do so.

edgar, I only know that Gene Krupa played drums, unfortunately. Just found out that Sal was murdered. Horror! I had forgotten that he was in Rebel Without a Cause. Poor James Dean.

Hope y'all enjoyed Merle and Annie.

Today is this guy's birthday, and I really like him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlAP2v7pvaQ

I can still hear him saying..."yawl". Razz

Hope I didn't miss anyone.

Watching Jackie Chan reminds me of a time my partner and I were doing some repairs inside a Chinese grocery store. One of the employees/owners? had a great big smile and a huge round face. He often said Y'all and used other redneck expressions and mannerisms when addressing us. I hugely enjoyed working there.

I learned this morning that Marty Robbins recorded his most famous album in a single day. Here is a song from it.

@edgarblythe,
I just noticed the comments on Jackie's video. They acted as though he was dead. How odd, edgar. Y'all ain't a redneck expression; it's part of a Southern drawl.

Love that one by Marty as I do all of his songs.

@edgarblythe,
the expression, "red neck" comes from the poor farmer who pushed the plow all day in the sun and got the back of his neck red, edgar.

" Peanuts " Hucko has his birthday today :

Quote:
Michael Andrew "Peanuts" Hucko (April 7, 1918 - June 19, 2003) was an American big band musician. His primary instrument was the clarinet.

He was born in Syracuse, New York, and moved to New York City in 1939; he played tenor saxophone with Will Bradley, Tommy Reynolds[1] and Joe Marsala until 1940. After a brief time with Charlie Spivak, he joined the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band in which he served in Europe during World War II. During this time,

Peanuts (the nickname comes from a childhood love of them)

began to concentrate on the clarinet "because we did a lot of marching in sand, which was awkward with the tenor." With Miller's Uptown Hall Gang, he was featured in a hard-driving version of Stealin' Apples.

( what a happy song it is ! )

Quote:
When you're smiling
When you're smiling
The whole world smiles with you

When you're laughing
When you're laughing
The sun comes shining through

But when you're crying
You bring on the rain
So stop your sighing
Be happy again

Keep on smiling
Cause when you're smiling
The whole world smiles with you

When you're smiling
When you're smiling
The whole world smiles with you

When you're laughing
When you're laughing
That sun comes shining through

But when you're crying
You bring on the rain
So stop your sighing
Be happy again
