@hamburgboy,
hbg, I had forgotten what a lovely voice Rise possessed. Love Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Ontario, and here's what happens when one's eyes fill with smoke.

Another Mozart.

@Letty,
msletty :

today is also the birthday of a german composer ( not very well known in north-america ) whose operetta music is still very popular in continental europe :

Quote:
Eduard Künneke (also spelled Künnecke) (27 January 1885 – 27 October 1953) was a German composer of operettas, operas and theatre music. He was born in Emmerich.

His daughter was the actress and singer Evelyn Künneke.
Künneke studied musicology and literature in Berlin, and was also an advanced student of Max Bruch. He worked as a repetiteur and chorus master at a Berlin operetta theatre, the Neues Operettentheater am Schiffbauerdamm, but relinquished his post as chorus master after his opera Robins Ende (1909) was premiered in Mannheim and then received productions at 38 different German opera houses. Künneke later worked under Max Reinhardt and wrote incidental music for Reinhardt’s staging of Part Two of Goethe's Faust.

Künneke's graceful music is distinguished by its rhythm and striking harmonies.

His best-known work is the 1921 operetta Der Vetter aus Dingsda ( the cousin from NOWHERE ); many of his songs are still familiar today.

let's hear from the cousin from NOWHERE ( he must be from SOME WHERE - i would think ... Wink ... ) .

the great german tenor Rudolf Schock sings " I'm just a poor wandering tradesman " ... tradesmen usually don't wear suits - do they ? ... so he is probably not as poor as he claims to be . Wink Wink Wink

edgar, Loved Harry's Mo Mary, and here he is again doing a song by the same man that wrote When Sunny Gets Blue (rip Bill)

hbg, need to do some laundry myself. our radio station does have it dirty moments. You played Meadowland twice, buddy, but it's worth it. I like your two versions better than mine. I think yours may be the one that involved Sputnik.

Scarlet Ribbons was Harry's first recording that people really took note of. I played a sad wedding song by Patti Page recently. Here is another sad wedding song

George, That was one odd version of Star Wars. I liked the contra bass, however.

edgar, Thanks for your comment and dear Hank Williams entire life was sad. My older sister and I decided he was a better poet than singer. Wedding Bells Are Ringing in the Chapel, was indeed a tear jerker.

Today is Lewis Carroll's birthday. (that was his nom de plume) and hear is Donovan doing one of my favorites when I was a kid

msletty , ed and all others :

it's always very enjoyable to listen to the music being played on QA2K Radio -

i doubt that any commercial station offers the variety and at the Navy Pier we have !

.....................................................................................................................

to prove it , here is Skitch Henderson with " CURACAO " .

remember seeing and hearing him and his band at the C.N.E.

( Canadian National Exhibition ) in Toronto and at the Navy Pier

( i think that's what it was called ? ) in Chicago many , many years ago .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHlthPNtUs4

( i think that's a great tune ! )
......................................................................................................
btw. this is what the Dutch write about him :

Quote:
Uitgevoerd door Skitch Henderson and the Tonight Show. Het was een tijdje de tune van Gerard De Vries op Radio Veronica en ook in gebruik bij de prgramma's van de zonnebloem-acties op deze zeezender. Bron: Het Tunes-boek, Jelle Boonstra en Benno Roozen.

i'm sure you all agree ... Smile ... Smile ... Smile ...

Most stations have a limited play list. Here, there are no limits, except ones we set for ourselves.

edgar, Thanks again for your comment. Ah, dear Selena. No Me Quedos Mas was beautiful. Enjoyed Van Dyke Parks as well, buddy.

hbg, Thank you so much for the comments about WA2K radio. It's a pleasure to have you with us. We all appreciate the information that you provide as well.

Skitch's Curacao was great. Thanks for the memory, dear friend.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall do so with one of my favorite hymns. I was a bit surprised to learn that Cardinal Newman didn't want his poem converted into music.

Hope the yitwails are alright.

From Letty with love to the world.

i am sure this is not everyone's cup of tea - but if you enjoy opera and operetta

highlights you probably can't go wrong with this :

the fabulous Jose Carreras teamed up with the Bratislava

" Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra " in 1992 for this outstanding concert .

btw. if you go to " full-screen " you'll be able to see how much the audience

enjoyed the performance .

the whole performance has been broken down into eleven sections of about

five minutes each - allowing you " to pick and choose " .

edgar, Mickey Gilley's The Girls Get Prettier is one that I didn't know. Thanks again for the memory.

hbg, I truly loved Josep Carreras' Bratislava. Thanks, Ontario.

Morgan, Welcome back. I Want to Come Over by Melissa was lovely.

We'll dedicate this one to our Aussie friends.
