Thanks for the hillbilly songs. The Thunderbirds were a fine group, I thought. And Hank Locklin had a number of hit records, although he personally never seemed to make the big time. Same with Bobby Helms. The other song and artist I did not know.

@edgarblythe,
Bobby Helms did a great job, edgar. Odd, because when I was a wee thing, my mom always listened to The Sons of the Pioneers. My Special Angel was great.

I never paid any attention to who did what, just listened

@eurocelticyankee,
euro, Welcome back to you as well. You sent me searching once again.

Villagers are an Irish band fronted by Conor J. O'Brien.

They have performed at several music festivals and toured with Tracy Chapman, Bell X1, Tindersticks and Elbow. They have one EP, titled Hollow Kind (2009). Their debut album Becoming a Jackal was released in 2010 and was shortlisted for both the Mercury Prize and the Choice Music Prize.

To Be Counted Among Men was fabulous and that young man did an excellent job.

Here's another count song.

@Barry The Mod,
Barry, Welcome back to you as well. Love that version of Vincent by Madeline. You're right. Live music is far better.

More synchronicity, London.

A curator removes Vincent van Gogh paintings on a carrier trolley at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012. While the museum closes for seven months for renovations, 75 works by the Dutch painter will be displayed instead across town at The Hermitage, an Amsterdam satellite of the Russian state museum. The tricky process of transporting the artworks under police escort began immediately after the last visitors left the museum Sunday evening and carried on through the night into Monday morning. The Van Gogh Museum reopens April 25, 2013.

Going to say goodnight a bit early as I had a sleepless night last evening.

today is the birthday of a great russian composer : Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich

here is Andre Rieu with his orchestra playing the wonderful " Second Waltz " .

Quote:
Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich[1] (25 September 1906 – 9 August 1975) was a Soviet Russian composer and pianist and a prominent figure of 20th century music.

Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Leon Trotsky's chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the government. Nevertheless, he received accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1947–1962) and the USSR (from 1962 until death).

today is also the birthday of Ian Tyson - a canadian folk singer .
let's enjoy his " Springtime in Alberta " :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb1tcVxi34Y&feature=fvwrel

Quote:
Ian Tyson CM, AOE (born 25 September 1933) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, best known for his song "Four Strong Winds". He was also one half of the duo Ian & Sylvia.
Tyson was born to British immigrants in Victoria in 1933, and grew up in Duncan B.C.[1] A rodeo rider in his late teens and early twenties, he took up the guitar while recovering from an injury he sustained in a fall. He has named fellow Canadian country artist Wilf Carter as a musical influence.[2] He made his singing debut at the Heidelberg Café in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1956 and played with a rock and roll band, "The Sensational Stripes." After graduation from the Vancouver School of Art in 1958, Tyson moved to Toronto, Ontario where he commenced a job as a commercial artist. There he performed in local clubs and in 1959 began to sing on occasion with Sylvia Fricker. By early 1959 Tyson and Fricker were performing part-time at the Village Corner as "Ian & Sylvia." The pair became a full-time musical act in 1961 and married four years later. In 1969, they formed and fronted the group The Great Speckled Bird. Residing in southern Alberta, Tyson toured all over the world.

In 1989 he was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

Dale Robertson was the star of Tales of Wells Fargo.
I saw Rex Allen at the San Antonio Rodeo, when I was 20. He had Koko, the dancing horse with him.

Debby Harry has come a long way, since her early songs.
It took me a long time to come to terms with Faulkner, but I have come to admire him.
