good evening msletty , ned and all listeners !
today is the birthday of Hugo Montenegro :

Quote:
Hugo Montenegro (September 2, 1925 - February 6, 1981[1]) was an American orchestra leader and composer of film soundtracks. His best known work is derived from interpretations of the music from Spaghetti westerns, especially his cover version of the main theme from the 1966 film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. He composed the musical score for the 1969 Western Charro! which starred Elvis Presley.

Hugo Mario Montenegro was born in New York City in 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years, mostly as an arranger for the Newport Naval Base band in Newport, Rhode Island. After the war he attended Manhattan College while studying composition and leading his own band for school dances.

in the middle 1950s, he was directing, conducting, and arranging the orchestra for Eliot Glen and Irving Spice on their Dragon and Caprice labels. It was he who was directing the Glen-Spice Orchestra on Dion DiMucci's first release when Dion was backed by Dragon recording artists, the Timberlanes. Released on Mohawk #105 in 1957, the songs were "Out In Colorado" and "The Chosen Few", which were soon issued on the Jubilee label for better distribution.

He was later hired by Time Records as a musical director producing a series of albums for the label, and moved to Los Angeles in the early 1960s where he began working for RCA Records, producing a series of albums and soundtracks for motion pictures and television themes, such as two volumes of Music From The Man From U.N.C.L.E., an album of cover versions of spy music themes Come Spy With Me and an album of cover versions of the Clint Eastwood The Man With No Name series of spaghetti westerns that led to major chart hits.

here is a " sharp tune " very well done by him and his orchestra :

here is a softer tune " Perfidia " :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kv8ZYTrfy8

Quote:
Perfidia" (Spanish for "perfidy", as in faithless, treacherous or false) is a popular song written by Alberto Domínguez[1] (1911–1975), a Mexican composer and arranger born in the state of Chiapas, about love and betrayal. Aside from the original Spanish, other renditions exist, including English and instrumental versions. The English lyrics are by Milton Leeds. The song was published in 1939 and became a hit for Xavier Cugat in 1940. This version was used by director Wong Kar-wai in his films Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love, and 2046.

Quote:
Laurindo Almeida (September 2, 1917, São Paulo, Brazil - July 26, 1995, Van Nuys, California) was a Brazilian virtuoso guitarist and composer who made many recordings of enduring impact in classical, jazz and Latin genres. He is widely credited, with fellow artist Bud Shank, for creating the fusion of Latin and jazz which came to be known as the “Jazz Samba.” Almeida was the first artist to receive Grammy Awards for both classical and jazz performances. Many, many thanks to all of our contributors. Wish I could acknowledge each one; unfortunately, I cannot.

As you know, my way of replying to the beauty of music is to thumb up each one.

I now recall the Lake House. It was a time warp thing. He died, but came back at the end.

Always good to have our hbg with us as well as edgar, Goethe, Rock, Barry, etc.

Had a wonderful evening at The Outback. Overate, of course, but it was worth the indulgence.

Today is Tony Bennett's birthday and what a shock to find out that he once overdosed on cocaine.

Here's one by him that I wasn't familiar with, but is great.

I did my bit of flirting on purpose; however, it didn't work as one older guy took it seriously. Uh-Oh. Rolling Eyes

Happy Labor Day to all.

Yes, in fact, edgar posted about his death a few posts before my own. I only wanted to add to the information edgar gave. Hal David's lyrics were great not only in the Bacharach songs but in other songs we sometimes forget about. Hal David collaborated with John Barry on "We Have All the Time in the World" and then again for the theme song in "Moonraker."

Hey, Brit. Love Tom Jones' I Want to Come Home.

edgar, I had to smile at Ray doing I'm Busted. That says a lot, right?

osso, I really love that Habanera by Carmen from Bizet.

wandeljw, I also love Moonraker by Shirley. She sings great. Still prefer Sean Connery, however. (remember, guys, it's PLAY)

Here's one to match Osso's and edgar will certainly know this one.

@wandeljw,
Sorry. Typically I check first. This time I slipped up. Hal's written some of the most memorable songs of my generation. I think he wrote Louis Armstrong's last big hit.
