edgar, you sent me searching again.

Thomas Bowers (ca. 1826–1885), also known as "The Colored Mario", was an African American concert artist. His title was due to the vocal similarity of his voice to Giovanni Mario, an Italian opera singer. Bowers toured with Elizabeth Greenfield in 1854 under the management of Colonel J.H. Wood. He was a teacher as well as a career soloist. He is the brother of professional singer Sarah Sedgewick Bowers, "the Colored Nightingale".

A fictionalized version of Thomas Bowers was portrayed by actor William Marshall in a 1964 episode of Bonanza entitled Enter Thomas Bowers.

That guy was fabulous. I watched a lot of Bonanza episodes, but somehow missed that one.

hbg, You're funny this evening. Wasn't there an expression "...housemaid's knees.." ? It came from those who scrubbed the floor on their knees. Loved Irish Washer Woman. I see you say supper instead of dinner. That's what my mamma called it, too.

Rock, I had to smile at edgar asking how you spelled Bingo. Played bingo when I was a wee thing. No more laundromats now. Do my own.

Couldn't get our Brit's version to play so here it is

@eurocelticyankee,
euroGeorge, Welcome back. That lady, Ruth Cahill, has the most beautiful and clear voice that I have ever heard. Singing a capella is difficult and she does a superb job. Thanks for the introduction to her and the song, She Moved Through the Fair.

Another interesting birthday, yawl. Today is this lady from Iceland's birthday.

first, some info.

Björk Guðmundsdóttir (born 21 November 1965), known simply as Björk (pronounced /ˈbjɜrk/ byurk in English), is an Icelandic singer-songwriter. Her eclectic musical style has achieved popular acknowledgement and popularity within many musical genres, such as rock, jazz, electronic dance music, classical and folk. Her voice has been acclaimed for its distinctive qualities.

Love the song she does.

@Barry The Mod,
You're right, Brit. She was much better in that movie. I checked it out and found that it was a sad story about her son and encroaching blindness for them both.

I only chose the first one because I liked the song. Incidentally, Adele was a fabulous vocalist. You probably missed it as yours wouldn't work here in the U.S.of A.

Speaking of dancing, here's "the boss" doing a great one.

@Barry The Mod,
Thanks for your comment, Brit. You'll have to divulge who "the little fellow" is should you like.

The "Boss's" Waiting on a Sunny Day was great. Ah, our Ursula loves him. Wish I could coax her back to WA2K. She and her Swede are such a delight.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall do so with with one of my favorite Canucks.

@Letty,
letty ,
looking for " housemaid's knee "
brought me to some video clips of bursitis - not pleasant !

so i settled on the " laundry " theme and found an old george formby performance about " chinese laundry blues " .

btw. when we arrived in canada in 1956 , there were still plenty of chinese laundries - even took some of my shirts there . wash-and-wear must have put them out of business ( and the children of the laundry owners are probably our physicians , accountants and financial experts ) .

here comes george :

Quote:
from wiki :
Formby's songs are rife with sly humour, as in 1932's "Chinese Laundry Blues," where Formby is about to sing "ladies' knickers" and suddenly changes it to "ladies' blouses"; and in 1940's "On the Wigan Boat Express," in which a lady passenger "was feeling shocks in her signal box." Formby's cheerful, innocent demeanour and nasal, high-pitched Lancashire accent neutralised the shock value of the lyrics; a more aggressive comedian like Max Miller would have delivered the same lyrics with a bawdy leer.

Good Morning, WA2K, folks.

hbg, Chinese Laundry Blues by George Formby was delightful.Made me think of Hong Kong Blues by Hoagy Carmichael. More synchronicity since today is his birthday.

Welcome back jcb. Kelly Clarkson's Mr. Know it All was fantastic. Don't know her but she made her point quite well. Often, I don't think we know ourselves.

Here's Hoagy doing Johnny's Skylark.

@edgarblythe,
Welcome back, edgar and thanks for your comments. Incidentally, Texas, you're supposed to NOT like The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. That's the whole point of tradition at its worst. It's just like Browning's Last Duchess.

ah, The Man in Black. Don't know Home of the Blues by Johnny, but it was really good.

Here's the Sassy Miss Sarah saying she's got a right to sing the blues.

@Letty,
It's not simply disliking what the characters do. I do not like it in the sense that I am sorry I ever read it. Nothing edifying there, in my view.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks again for your comment on Sarah, edgar. Don't know Autumn Waltz by Tony, but I enjoyed it.

Another new face on the horizon. Today is this man's birthday.

First, some info.

Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (22 November 1913 – 4 December 1976) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was an outstanding pianist and conductor.

Now, The tribute.
