btw. if you have not yet read his autobiography , i'd highly recommend it .

good night from ontario .

My apologies for responding so late. Sad I was extremely busy yesterday. Incidentally, since I'm fairly busy from day to day, I regretfully won't have time to respond to every single reaction to my selections.

I had not followed Sammy Davis, Jr.'s, singing career when he was alive. I listened mostly to rock. The only song of his I ever heard was "The Candy Man." I'm considerably more impressed by the YouTube music video to which you provided a link. Wow! What a great singer he was! I agree with your estimation. (Of course, because of the administration's "Southern strategy," I got annoyed when he endorsed President Nixon's reelection, not that Senator McGovern was my first choice for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1972).

Thanks for recommending his autobiography. Smile

Letty, your thread is really great! What a wonderful idea! Smile

http://www.youtube.com is one of my favorite websites. Thanks to YouTube, I've been able to hear particular rock songs that I hadn't heard in decades. I mean since they were last played on the radio in my neck of the woods. My own selections in this thread will include rock songs that are not well-known today, but (in my estimation, at least) are a pleasure to hear.

@wmwcjr,
wm :
coming from germany to canada in 1956 , we , of course , saw a lot of american tv-shows - most of the shows we quite enjoyed .
however , we had at that time no idea that sammy davis jr. ( and other black performers ) literally had to enter some/many establishments " through the kitchen " to gain admission to the stage " .

anyhow , sammy may have thrown his life away - as did/do many other great entertainers - but he indeed was a great entertainer .

let's hear him again :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvYmL5KsvYA&feature=related

and i'm quite sure you'll find sammy's story interesting - even though it's a sad story imo .

Great to hear all the wonderful music today.

Fil, That Artificial Intelligence bit sent me searching

In the not-so-far future the polar ice caps have melted and the resulting raise of the ocean waters has drowned all the coastal cities of the world. Withdrawn to the interior of the continents, the human race keeps advancing, reaching to the point of creating realistic robots (called mechas) to serve him. One of the mecha-producing companies builds David, an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, especially a never-ending love for his "mother", Monica. Monica is the woman who adopted him as a substitute for her real son, who remains in cryo-stasis, stricken by an incurable disease. David is living happily with Monica and her husband, but when their real son returns home after a cure is discovered, his life changes dramatically. That was in the days of SciFi. Now it's SyFy.

Odd, I know Sakura Sakura. I think there are lyrics to match that song played on that fantastic instrument.

hbg, Thanks for the tango from Argentina and the visit to Eva's grave site. It reminded me of this one.

Hope I didn't miss any contributions, yawl.

Such a great array of fine music. I love Sakura. Here is another version. A high school choir sings along with Harry.

@hamburgboy,
I grew up under Jim Crow in the state of Texas -- a shameful institution, indeed, and one that was not confined to the deep South. Crying or Very sad (I'm white, by the way.)

I've quoted the "Racism" subsection of the Wikipedia article on the late and great black American singer Nat King Cole as follows:

Quote:
Cole fought racism all his life and rarely performed in segregated venues. In 1956, he was assaulted on stage during a concert in Birmingham, Alabama, with the Ted Heath Band, (while singing the song "Little Girl") by three members of the North Alabama White Citizens Council (a group led by Education of Little Tree author Asa "Forrest" Carter, himself not among the attackers), who apparently were attempting to kidnap him. The three male attackers ran down the aisles of the auditorium towards Cole and his band. Although local law enforcement quickly ended the invasion of the stage, the ensuing melée toppled Cole from his piano bench and injured his back. Cole did not finish the concert and never again performed in the South. A fourth member of the group who had participated in the plot was later arrested in connection with the act. All were later tried and convicted for their roles in the crime.[10]

In 1948, Cole purchased a house in the all-white Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Ku Klux Klan, still active in Los Angeles well into the 1950s, responded by placing a burning cross on his front lawn. Members of the property-owners association told Cole they did not want any undesirables moving in. Cole retorted, "Neither do I. And if I see anybody undesirable coming in here, I'll be the first to complain."[11]

In 1956, he was contracted to perform in Cuba and wanted to stay at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, Havana, but was not allowed to because it operated a color bar. Cole honored his contract, and the concert at the Tropicana was a huge success. The following year, he returned to Cuba for another concert, singing many songs in Spanish. There is now a tribute to him in the form of a bust and a jukebox in the Hotel Nacional.[12]

Eva was by Julie Covington, I believe. Good song. I know absolutely nothing about Eva and her times, but the song is a good one.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks again, edgar, for your comments. Dear Bobby Darin. He did so many good songs.

Wow! Now I know why I know Sakura. Harry did it.

I didn't know much about Eva Peron either. I guess we all need to check her out. Thanks for providing the vocalist

My word, Texas, I know that one by Don Cornell. The shortest song title ever. I.

Hurry back, Brit. Tony and Amy were good. Sad about her demise.

How about a birthday boy and a little jazz for the afternoon.

the lyrics that feature a musical dialogue.

My baby, she may not look
Like one of those bunnies out of the Playboy book
Well, I'm sorry bout that, Mr. Williams
But she's got something,
Johnny, much greater than gold
Well, now what's that?
I'm crazy 'bout that girl,
she's got so much soul

She's got the kind of loving, kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow, glad that I'm her fellow
And I know that she knocks me off my feet
Have mercy on me!
'Cause she knocks me off my feet
Can you dig it?

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love me like you do - ow!
Tell 'em bout it, Watson

My baby now, when she walks by
All the fellows go '~~~', and I know why
Have mercy, just look at her walk
It's simply because that girl, she walks so fine
And if she ever leave me, I will lose my mind

Because she's got the kind of lovin',
kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow, glad that I'm her fellow
And I know that she knocks me off my feet
Have mercy on me!
'Cause she knocks me off my feet
I'd better tell 'em one more thing

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love me like you do
Ow, tell 'em bout it, Mr. Williams

When I found this particular YouTube music video, I considered not posting it -- since, quite likely, all of us here have already seen it many times. But I thought I should, because it's such a classic -- classic animation accompanied by classical music. (Besides, I've always loved scary music.) Fantasia was released in 1940 -- a dark year, indeed. The famous composers of these two masterpieces (Modest Mussorgsky and Franz Schubert) were, respectively, a Russian and an Austrian. As we know, 1940 was not a good year for the Russians and the Austrians.

@wmwcjr,
Well, wm, we've got the Wells Fargo wagon, and the Welcome Wagon.

Love Fantasia's Midnight on Bald Mountain.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall do so with two songs.

First, a birthday boy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ggvZJRx4G0

Now, Jan Peerce sings the beautiful song from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

So nice to have Canada, London, and Portugal with us today.

From Letty with love to the world
