@Letty,
Joan Baez's House of the Rising Sun tells the story from the point of view of a young woman.

@wandeljw,
Had no idea that Joan had done that one, wandel. edgar likes the Animals' version better, but I prefer this one from the viewpoint of a man.

Strange, I found this observation of "the house".

I have made a study of the history of prostitution in New Orleans and have often confronted the perennial question, 'Where is the House of the Rising Sun?' without finding a satisfactory answer. Although it is generally assumed that the singer is referring to a brothel, there is actually nothing in the lyrics that indicate that the 'house' is a brothel. Many knowledgeable persons have conjectured that a better case can be made for either a gambling hall or a prison; however, to paraphrase Freud: sometimes lyrics are just lyrics.

@Letty,
You are correct, Letty, sometimes lyrics are just lyrics. Still, the lyrics in Joan Baez's version seems to tell a more coherent story.

@Letty,
Hi All at WA2K,
Had to do a few hours work today, working on the Sabbath,
that's limbo for me Wink
Enjoyed Jerry & Hank, Jerry certainly could tickle the ivories.
Enjoyed both Joan's songs, really liked the Spanish song, never
knew she did "House of the Rising Sun", nice.
The only song I remember Toto doing was this one, Africa.

Good Sunday morning. The rain is over and it's cold. Lots of great contributions in my absence. Where to begin? Elvis on the Frank Sinatra TV show was very appropriate. I really think House of the Rising Sun was written from a girl's perspective.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5tOpyipNJs

there is a house in new orleans
they call the rising sun
it's been the ruin of a many a poor girl
and me, oh god are one

if i had listened like momma said
i would not be here today
but being so young and foolish too
that a gambler lead me astray

come tell my baby sisters
dont do what i have done
please shun that house in new orleans
they call the rising sun

i'm goin back to new orleans
my race is almost run
i'm goin back to new orleans
beneath the rising sun

The older words are a little different, but not by a lot.

The Bob Dylan songs originally appeared on the albums Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait. He wrote only the first of the two, I believe.

@eurocelticyankee,
That is my favorite by ToTo, Irish. Thanks for playing it. (uhoh! When you said "limbo", I thought of the dance under the pole. Remember that?)

Today is Dave Matthews' birthday, so here is one by the band, y'all.

I really like the Roseanne Cash and Carly Simon songs. I mentioned before that my first wife told me Carly's song was about me.

Ahh , Leonard Cohen, what can you say, I've been trying to
find out if he is touring this year, there's a rumour he's playing
in Liverpool in July, I hope so.

@eurocelticyankee,
You're funny today, Irish. Love it! Great one by Shaft, but the only one that I've heard do that one is Dino. Thanks for your comments, buddy.

Wow! Wicked Game by Chris Isaak was awesome. Need to see if I can locate I'll Never Fall in Love Again.

In the meantime, let's Limbo. (I won a contest doing that pole dance)

@edgarblythe,
Love that one by Jo, edgar. Long Ago and Far Away was also done by "old Blue eyes", methinks.

For those who may not remember the limbo.
