Well, Gordon and Freddie did well, as did Oscar. I am a Richard Burton fan. That was the first time I heard that anthem, Barry.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, I have really come to appreciate the "country genre". Hank had a way of saying things that could only be heard in his music. Thanks for that one, Texas.

Today is Roy Scheider's birthday, and I always liked the guy, y'all. Unfortunately, most people only remember the movie Jaws.

Roy Richard Scheider (November 10, 1932 " February 10, 2008) was an American actor. He was best known for his role as police chief Martin Brody in Jaws, as choreographer and film director Joe Gideon in All That Jazz, and as detective Buddy Russo in The French Connection. Scheider's final performance is to be released posthumously in the 2010 thriller Iron Cross.

Here is a tribute to the man.

Roy was in some good films. I did not appreciate Jaws, but it had nothing to do with him.
Here are Dean and Tony, two of my favorite guys.

Quote:
When film star Roy Scheider died last year, a crucial scene in the action film he was making had not yet been completed.
The film-makers' unique answer was to build a prosthetic latex mask based on Scheider's distinctive features and to use it, along with computer-generated imagery, to bring the lead actor back to life for one last performance.

I liked him in Marathon man with Dustin Hoffman. I was sad when his character was killed off

Ah, Donna's Happiest Girl. I don't know if that was her biggest song, but it's certainly the one I associate with her.

panz, Welcome back. I have the trailer for that movie, but I had no idea about the circumstances involved.

er, edgar, I do believe that I like Nat's Ballerina better, but thanks for that one by Van the Man. Really like him generally.

Couple of things, folks,

First, Pat Boone and I do hope this confirms the fact that he is still alive. Razz

Now let's see if we can find that trailer, y'all.

some songs about war

Alec Campbell, the last known survivor of the ANZAC forces at Gallipoli (and the last known survivor of Gallipoli) died on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at the age of 103.

Mr. Campbell enlisted at 16, and served at Gallipoli in 1915. He led Hobart's ANZAC Day parade three weeks prior to his death.

As I pointed out in the Pat Boone thread, I have a collection of most of his hits on vinyl. He was a very fine artist, except when covering certain of rhythm and blues. I don't say this because so many fault him for covering ethnic artists; it's a statement of my personal opinion. As for his religious and political views, I hold the right to separate that from his artistry.
My favorites of his are
I Almost Lost My Mind
Don't Forbid Me
Friendly Persuasion
Anastasia
Goldmine in the Sky

dj, I particularly enjoyed "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and then edgar follows with a very funny song by an Aussie. The reason being that I had a great Aussie come today to give me an estimate on restoring my defunct hot water pipe. He knew what he was talking about, and the estimate was very reasonable. He's from Melbourne, incidentally.

edgar, I love Anastasia by Pat as well, buddy.

I was thinking about No Man's Land today, because I am still attempting to separate the fact from the fiction of war.

For those who are interested, here is a reference to WWI

http://www.threeworldwars.com/world-war-1/ww1.htm

And, y'all, a song about trench warfare.

@Letty,
good night letty

farmerman asked this question

..."to the vagrant gypsy's life"... WHERE'D THE SUMMER GO?

perhaps belle and sebastian have the answer

I know where the summer goes
When you're having no fun
When you're under the thumb
I know where the summer dwells
If your underarm smells
And your kitchen looks like hell

I know where the summer goes
If you're scraping a pot, and your head is hot
Put your head down, put your thumbs up girl
With the smell of hot desk
And the glitter of your step
He was right, he's the upcoming guru of the city
No one told the city councillors

I know, you can tell me again
I've got my mobile phone
Full of silicon chips
No one likes a smart arse
But I've seen a pattern emerge
I will race you up the hill
Where the boy who made records out of postcard messages
And flowering cherries rain on kids like you

Look twice at the kid with the crimped
And overheated hair
They ran a book on his looks
Odds on was the noble pose and
The denim hard riff of the Irish Troubadour
But the boy came from nowhere to
Steal the hearts of lassies in the lavvies of the club tonight

@djjd62,
of course round our way it's more like this

From the dew-soaked hedge creeps a crawly caterpillar,
When the dawn begins to crack.
It's all part of my autumn almanac.
Breeze blows leaves of a musty-coloured yellow,
So I sweep them in my sack.
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.

Friday evenings, people get together,
Hiding from the weather.
Tea and toasted, buttered currant buns
Can't compensate for lack of sun,
Because the summer's all gone.

La-la-la-la...
Oh, my poor rheumatic back
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.
La-la-la-la...
Oh, my autumn almanac
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.

I like my football on a Saturday,
Roast beef on Sundays, all right.
I go to Blackpool for my holidays,
Sit in the open sunlight.

This is my street, and I'm never gonna to leave it,
And I'm always gonna to stay here
If I live to be ninety-nine,
'Cause all the people I meet
Seem to come from my street
And I can't get away,
Because it's calling me, (come on home)
Hear it calling me, (come on home)

La-la-la-la...
Oh, my autumn Armagnac
Yes, yes, yes, it's my autumn almanac.
La-la-la-la...
Oh, my autumn almanac
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Bop-bop-bopm-bop-bop, whoa!
Bop-bop-bopm-bop-bop, whoa!
(etc.)

djjd - Those are great.
letty - Frank was in excellent voice.
I am one of those cynical about the causes of war. I have never wholeheartedly supported the fighting of any war in my lifetime. That is not to cast aspersions on the ones in uniform. I wore one myself. One must divide one's loyalties into separate compartments and try to keep them all separated.
