btw there are still a few organ grinders left in german - usually paid for by merchants as a tourist attraction - no need to drop a dime in the cup

@hamburgboy,
hbg, Welcome back. Love the calliope(organ grinder) music, and was delightfully surprised to learn that it was named from the Greek goddess.

The first one I know, but not certain why. The second one was new to me, Canada.

Ah, the cuckoo bird has inspired many creations, and here's another replete with lyrics, y'all. This one is from Brazil.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARMhrL54q5Q&feature=related

OH, TICO TICO, TICK!
OH, TICO TICO, TOCK!
THIS TICO TICO, HE'S THE CUCKOO IN MY CLOCK.
AND WHEN HE SAYS "CUCKOO,"
HE MEANS IT'S TIME TO WOO,
IT'S TICO TIME FOR ALL THE LOVERS ON THE BLOCK.

I'VE GOT A HEAVY DATE,
A TETE A TETE AT EIGHT,
SO SPEAK, OH, TICO, TELL ME IF IT'S GETTING LATE?
IF I'M ON TIME, CUCKOO,
BUT, IF I'M LATE, WOO-WOO!
THE ONE MY HEART IS GONE TO MAY NOT WANT TO WAIT!

FOR JUST A BIRDIE, AND A BIRDIE WHO GOES
NOWHERE,
HE KNOWS OF EVERY LOVER'S LANE AND HOW TO GO
THERE;
FOR IN AFFAIRS OF THE HEART
MY TICO'S TERRIBLY SMART,
HE TELLS ME: "GENTLY, SENTIMENT'LY AT THE
START!"

OH, OH, I HEAR MY LITTLE TICO TICO CALLING
BECAUSE THE TIME IS RIGHT AND SHADES OF NIGHT
ARE FALLING.
I LOVE THAT NOT-SO-CUCKOO CUCKOO IN THE CLOCK,
TICO TICO TICO TICO TICO TOCK!!!

Another afternoon session and the clocks are really not working properly, folks.

Today is BeeGee's birthday, so let's listen to an ode from her.

Thinking of Chicago again. Anyone remember this one?

Ode to Billy Joe is an interesting song, letty.

Your video about Chicago, '68, reminds me of Phil Ochs, who attended the demonstrations with a group dubbed "the Yippies." He wrote some songs around that theme, including this very short one:

Where were you in Chicago
No I didn't see you there
I didn't see them break your heads
Or breathe the teargas there
Oh where were you in Chicago
When the fight was being fought
Where were you in Chicago
Cause I was in Detroit

@edgarblythe,
There's background to that song by Bobbie Gentry, edgar. Believe it or not, there may be some truth involved.

Well, Texas, you got me interested in Phil Ochs, so I did some research. My God, the kid died so young, and those lyrics sounded rather like a spoof on those in Chicago who were protesting.

Couldn't find The Draft Dodger Rag by him, but I found this version.

Also, folks, I was stunned to find that he did a song based on Alfred Noyes poem, The Highwayman. Wow!

Ruby Ann

Marty was in a category of his own. I miss hearing new songs from him.

He was trying for irony with Where Were You in Chicago, letty. It appeared on the album, Rehearsals For Retirement. He often had trouble with the studio, because his albums did not sell well. He was criticised for the line, "In Lincoln Park, The dark was turning, turning." He lived and breathed his convictions, at the expense of his career.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for Ruby Ann by Marty, edgar. Ok, now I understand about Phil. My hippie days were mostly about research and clothes. Still love them.

I guess my favorite by Marty Robbins was The Alamo. It was history in a song.

When I was looking for info about Floyd Cramer, I happened to see Boots Randolph among his cronies. I had forgotten about Boots, and I did NOT know this was played behind Bennie Hill's show.

Here he is, folks.

Boots Randolph has been there forever, it seems. He did a few other songs I once liked, but now I don't recall any.

@edgarblythe,
Poor Norma Jean. Never heard that song, edgar, but I just remembered a movie that I liked and the theme was sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Can't find it on youtube, however. I even remember some of the lyrics.

There is a river,
Called the river of no return
Sometimes it's peaceful,
And sometimes wild and free.

Ah, well, folks. I'll keep searching.

Here's a birthday girl, y'all, so let's listen to some motown.

Yeah. River of No Return was a movie, starring her and Robert Mitchum. It was one of the first Cinemascope films.

@edgarblythe,
Wonder where the animals are? Didn't realize that about the River of No Return. Thanks, Texas.

Love that one by Johnny Mathis, edgar. He had quite a range.

Well, Time for me to say goodnight, and this is a good song to do it with since today is Maureen McGovern's birthday.

Good early morning, WA2K folks

edgar, thanks for the trailer to River of No Return. Can't remember one thing about it except the music. Had no idea that the American Indians named the river. Thanks Texas. Incidentally, how did you sleep with Fats' boogie urging us to dance?

Hey, Rock. Welcome back. Wow! that song was by the Crickets without Buddy? We do discover so many things on our radio, right?

Today is Richard Wright's birthday. No, not the haiku man, the former singer with Pink Floyd.

Here's a tribute, folks.

We'll do this one for the Brit. I have only heard it by Willie Nelson.

Pink Floyd is one of those bands that keeps on giving long after the fact.
You Were Always on My Mind is a fitting song for that tribute, since Elvis had pretty good sales off the song also.

I am still on my Marty kick.
