@Rockhead,
I used to have that Platters version on 45 RPM in high school and played it until the grooves disappeared. Having an eclectic taste and also on the charts at the time was Caterina Valenti's version of "The Breeze and I," her performed in concert with "Malaguena:"

Also the orchestra who originally backed the hit recording of "The Breeze and I," the German band, Werner Muller, this one of his fabulous tango recordings -- anyone want to dance? Even with the star-you-never-heard-of?

@Izzie,
Mr. Wizard, your video didn't work. I have the link to your song, however.

Izzie, This kind of box? It's a music box, gal. Loved your S-Club song.

I'm assuming by "BEAgle" you mean Dutchy.

Here's the wizard's song, y'all.

Whew. Lots of good music, folks. As for girls I left behind and a girl in every port - It's a myth. Actually, it's three plus girls in every port.
Good afternoon, you great people. I wasn't familiar with dys's version of Waterboy, but it's a great video. Same with Izzie's music. I know the rest of the songs - all great stuff.

One is a Swizz Chalet that plays Eidelweiss (Sound of Music - there's a thing Rolling Eyes) which I was given when I a weeIzz, one that belonged to GrannyIzz which plays....errr.... doesn't play anymore - and this one which I got for the BigBoy not long after he was born - as you'll see - it's seen better days in the last 16 years and you have to keep tapping it to make it go - but he LOVED it when he was a weeBigBoy... <ahhhhhhhh memories a?>

(click the pic to see the video - 'scuse the kitty - he was being nosey!)

Oops, missed Mr. Wizard's tango. Have always loved them ever since I saw Anthony Dexter do the life of Rudolph Valentino. Thanks, buddy.

edgar, enjoyed the video and I recall "Young Girl". Thanks, Texas.

Izzie, Glad that you cleared that up about Dutchy, and sorry about losing the sound on your rainbow.(my older sister told me that my dad would ride by on his horse flirting with the girls and singing, "Be My Rainbow. I'm looking at his picture in his WWI uniform right now. What a hunk)

Love that little choo choo train and, of course, even kids today know Glen and Bing, I would guess. Thanks for the reminder of the big Band Days.

The Leroy Anderson mention reminded me of another tango, y'all.

Incidentally, Long Black Veil was an allusion to the woman in black who visited Valentino's grave. I checked it out.

@Letty,
I ran into Anthony Dexter going to a USC game at the LA Coliseum when I was a student. He had either gotten a sunburn or he overdid it on the libations. I don't remember his arms being red but pale as a white sheet.

Werner Muller released several LP's which were a "Holiday in ____" series -- his orchestra was the size of a symphonic band. I had them all but they were mono and never released on CD. The Tango album and a few others were from a series of recordings for London in their Phase 4 Stereo process.

@Letty,
The video isn't embedded by choice of the poster but the link is directly below. I clicked on play and it just routed me to YouTube, where there's several videos with Catarina, some later ones in stereo.

edgar, I love Janis Joplin's "Turtle Blues". Listened a couple of times to see why it was so named, and got it the second time around..." a turtle without its shell."

Thanks, Mr. Wizard, for the memory concering Anthony Dexter. I recall your having said that many moons ago. Died too young like so many talented folks.

The reason that I didn't hit the link is because the last time that I did that, the equipment in my wee studio went crazy. I need to visit the tango man's area when I get the chance.

I think many of us here missed the tribute to Duke Ellington on his birthday, so I think I'll replay it, folks.

@Letty,
Anthony Dexter didn't die young -- I think you meant Valentino, right?

Quote:
Anthony Dexter was born Walter Reinhold Alfred Fleischmann, on January 19, 1913, in Talmadge, Nebraska. He earned an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa. Anthony Dexter was a stage actor before and after his World War II army service. His casting in the title role of the 1951 film "Valentino", which was greeted with a fanfare of publicity, was the culmination of one of the greatest talent hunts in the history of motion pictures. Producer Edward Small's search covered 11 years of effort and brought forth 75,000 applicants for the job of playing the legendary silent film star, Rudolph Valentino.

Tony Dexter, one time Nebraska farm boy, college choir singer, football star and G.I. sergeant, proved he had the right stuff. Of all of the actors who have tried to play Valentino in subsequent films, his portrayal remains by far the best. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Rudy, Anthony Dexter was well-suited to the role. His acting and dancing skills, along with good production values, made "Valentino" an entertaining film.

Tall and handsome, Anthony Dexter was known to have one of the best physiques in Hollywood of his day. He went on to star in a number of other films, including The Brigand (1952), Captain John Smith And Pocahontas (1953); Captain Kidd and the Slave Girl (1954); The Black Pirates (1954); He Laughed Last (1956); The Story of Mankind (1957); The Parson and the Outlaw (1957); Twelve To The Moon (1960); and Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967).

After retiring from the screen, Anthony Dexter, now known as Mr. Walter Craig, became a teacher of English and Drama. When he retired from teaching, Mr. Craig moved to Greeley, Colorado, where he lived until his death on March 27, 2001. His passing ended an era, which began with the great Valentino with whom Anthony Dexter will always be identified. He is survived by two daughters, Kimberly and Claudia, and four grandchildren. He will remain in the loving memory of his family, his friends and his fans around the world.

dys, That song by Janis Ian was haunting. I liked the modified latin beat, too.

"when I was seventeen it was a very good year." Remember that, cowboy?

Mr. Wizard, I don't know why I thought that Anthony Dexter died young. I guess it was because I was seventeen when I read about him.<smiles> Thanks for that info, especially all the other movies in which he starred.

Well, it's time for me to say goodnight, y'all, and since it is Michelle Pfeiffer's birthday, I'm going to do the music from Ladyhawke. It's my favorite of her roles. (not to mention Rudger's)
