@JPB,
I recall when At Last was a hit by Etta James. I knew it would be a classic.

@edgarblythe,
I'm a big Etta James fan, edgar. From wiki...

Quote:
There are at least two versions of how Johnny Otis discovered Etta James. Otis's version is that she came to his hotel room after one of his performances in San Francisco and persuaded him to audition her (this is the version that Johnny tells to this day). Another frequently told story is that Otis spotted her performing in an L.A. nightclub with The Peaches and, having conceived of the answer song to Hank Ballard's "Work With Me, Annie," arranged with the Bihari brothers for Modern Records to record "The Wallflower" with James. "The Wallflower" reached number two on the rhythm and blues charts in February 1955 but was undercut in the wider market by a rushed-out cover version by Georgia Gibbs on Mercury Records. In fact, the very first time she was recorded in studio, they used the first take she recorded and it became number one on the top 100 songs in the nation.

Here's another great song from Etta

Good afternoon, WA2K folks.

Hey, puppy, thanks again for the fabulous quartet of famous folks and the additional info. You always keep us on our toes. Also loved the Rusty Draper song. I also like Freight Train by him although it's different from the version by Peter, Paul, and Mary.

edgar, that was a funny barber song by Woody Woodpecker. Thanks for the afternoon smile, Texas.

JPB, Etta James was the original female jazz vocalist. Love "At Last" and all the rest. Thanks, Chicago.

Here's a different side of Dean Jones. He didn't just do The Love Bug VW.

And a tribute to Robert Burns by Jo Stafford, y'all.

That's a great Mozart (as if I had to mention it). Here is my good night. A great video, accompanied by When You Wish Upon a Star.

@edgarblythe,
Good morning, WA2K folks.

edgar, Ah, I used to wish upon a star when I was a wee thing. Thanks, Texas and that Scottish song was beautiful. I listened two or three times. I convinced myself that those wishes came true. Strange, it seems that a lost Mozart composition has been discovered, but alas I couldn't locate the recording to play.

Well, it seems that today is Anita Baker's birthday. I'm not familiar with her, but this song is lovely, y'all.

Good morning. That one reminds me of a very young Sarah Vaughn, letty. I'm listening to Johnny Burnette this morning.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, I have never heard Johnny Burnette, but the lyrics "..it's a big, big city.." reminded me of this one.

"...the eyes are the windows of the soul..."

What a tragedy to learn that your vocalist drowned at thirty years of age.

On another section of our forum, Phoenix was discussing the influence of others on one's life. I mostly operate through the idea of inspiration. C.I.'s cruises inspired me to find this song to play on our radio.

Johnny Burnette had a brother, Dorsey. Here is one by Dorsey. Also, Johnny's son became a country singer. Can't recall his stage name.

@edgarblythe,
Loved both of those versions, edgar, and you just inspired me to research the meaning behind the forbidden fruit and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We'll dedicate that one to our Brooke, Texas.

Another inspiration. Setanta's suggestion to boomer about a book that Mo might read was Johnny Tremain. The movie came from Disney's carousal of color. So here is the clip, folks.

@Raggedyaggie,
There's our puppy, y'all, with a quintet of famous faces and additional info. Thanks, PA you always inspire me to do research.

Here is a tribute to Paul Newman and at the end, the poem that was his elegy sent me to the archives

Inscription of the poem on a gravestone in an English churchyard
Do not stand at my grave and weep is a poem, written by Mary Elizabeth Frye (1905-2004). Although of disputed origin until later in her 98 years of life, Mary Frye's authorship was confirmed in 1998 after research by Abigail Van Buren, the newspaper columnist.

When C.I. said that he had visited Pitcarin Island, that also inspired me to locate this one.

I couldn't say goodnight without remembering edgar's inspiration. I just looked at his vignette, "Death Came with Gentle Jaws". The title alone is beautiful. It made me realize that he had a bit of Robert Browning hidden there in his multifaceted talent.

Can't forget Bud. He taught me more about jazz than I could appreciate, so this is for him.

@Letty,
Hi Miss Letty, I'm doing right now what Slim Dusty is singing about, having a beer. We're in the middle of a heat wave, 110.5 degrees today, with another weedk to go, so this song is very appropriate. Laughing
