@Izzie,
Oops, missed you again, Izzie. No, honey, it's her daughter's birthday

edgar, I had no idea that Mary Martin sang that song.

Remember her as Peter Pan, however.

@Izzie,
Ah, Izzie, I thought all my tears were gone, but I guess not. Love that tribute to Janis Joplin. Don McLean also refers to her in his American Pie.

Here's another song by Bette that makes my eyes water, y'all.

@Izzie,
Wow! I had no idea that Gilbert O sullivan was Irish. Great song, Izzie, and I could have sworn that he did "Seasons in the Sun".

Well, folks, this will be my discovery for the evening as well as my goodnight song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oahZaAtyKqs

and, the lyrics in English

Goodbye Emil, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye Emil, it's hard to die
When all the bird's are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
I wish we could both be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the hills we could climb were just seasons out of time

Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to show me right from wrong
But too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along

Goodbye Papa, it's hard to die
When all the bird's are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little kids are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons have all gone

Goodbye Francoise, my trusted wife
Without you I'd had a lonely life
You cheated lots of times with them
But I forgave you in the end
Though your lover was my friend

Goodbye Francoise, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With your lovers everywhere
Just be careful, I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach

Goodbye Michelle, my little one
You gave me joy and helped me find the sun
And every time when I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground

Goodnight, all

@edgarblythe,
ah, edgar, I love that song, and especially intriguing was that log blazing in the fireplace. I guess that I'll have to do that soon as it is cold here.

Well, folks, today WA2K is four years old. Imagine that! how about a pipe organ procession by Mr. Purvis.

@Raggedyaggie,
Hey, puppy, I do hope puppyII had a great birthday. Thanks again for the quartet of famous folks and the info on others.

Incidentally, PA. I checked out Alan Paton and I do believe that Cry the Beloved Country alluded to biblical figures such as King David's son and Mary Magdelene.

Ah, I recall Julie Harris doing The Belle of Amherst. Dear Emily Dickinson. Still love her poetry.

Here's one that we all will recognize, y'all.

Don McLean referred to James Dean's coat, methinks.

I liked Jimmy Dean, particularly in East of Eden, but also in Giant.
Here is a song about some wild horses.

@edgarblythe,
Great song by Mick, edgar. How is this for synchronicity, Texas. Michael Martin Murphey did The Yellow Rose of Texas and wasn't that the song that caused the riot? I vaguely recall that James Dean got very rich striking oil and that he had a thing for Liz Taylor.

And for some more sync - Julie Harris played opposite James Dean in East of Eden.

Don't recall a riot in Giant, but I remember The Yellow Rose of Texas - loud and clear everytime Rock Hudson appeared. Yep. James Dean struck it rich and was in love with Elizabeth Taylor, but Rock Hudson was her man.

That's an interesting observation about the bible and Cry the Beloved Country, Letty.
Paton's words are very impressive when sung to Kurt Weil's music in Lost in the Stars. I think you'd like the music.

@edgarblythe,
Hmm, edgar. Did a bit of research and found this blurb about the song. My word, wasn't Rock Hudson a great looking guy. Don't recall Dennis Hopper, however. Thanks for that clip.

According to wiki;

Owing to the use of ballad meter, the lyrics of The Yellow Rose of Texas are interchangeable with those of many other songs and poems. Popular examples are many of the poems of Emily Dickinson, the hymn Amazing Grace and The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle.

The song is prominently featured in the film Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. The film examines the changes and growth of Texas in the 20th Century and changing attitudes toward multiculturalism. In one climactic scene taking place in a diner, Hudson's character defends the honor of his family, especially his Hispanic daughter-in-law and his grandson. The Yellow Rose of Texas plays on the jukebox after it is jostled during the fight. The song underscores the scene and its context.

Satirical songwriter Allan Sherman produced a parody called "Melvin Rose of Texas" as part of one of his "Schticks and Stones" medleys.

The First Lady of Texas is popularly given the nickname the "Yellow Rose of Texas" by the Texan people. The title is unofficial and is widely, although not universally, accepted.

I think most of our listeners know that "the yellow rose" was a mulatto.

Yellow Rose and its many interpetations. The second of these was the theme song to a TV series, called, I think, Yellow Rose.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, that Stan Freberg version is hilarious. "Damn Yankee Drummer" covered up the tra la la's. What a master of parody, and nothing was sacred with the man. His album, Stan Freberg presents the United States of America, had all of us in stitches. I think what happened, is that the original version of Yellow Rose may have sounded a wee bit racist and that's why many versions became politically correct.

Raggedy, I'll add more later about my interp of Cry the Beloved Country.

Here's a solemn version of I'll Be Home for Christmas, folks.
