Good afternoon WA2K.

I can't find John Denver in today's list, Letty. You don't want New Years Eve to be over, perhaps.

Remembering: Ray Bolger, Paul Henried, Johnnie Ray, singer (I remember "The Little White Cloud That Cried"); Sal Mineo and Jim Croce

Hey, Raggedy. I'm blaming everything on the web today. Glad that you have your power, however.

Thanks again for the great collage, puppy.

My word, folks, I just found out that Rod Stewart did The Nearness of You.

It's not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you

breaking news.

Edmund Hillary, first atop Everest, dies By RAY LILLEY, Associated Press Writer
48 minutes ago

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Sir Edmund Hillary, the unassuming beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers, has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Friday. He was 88.

The gangling New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called "Ed" and considering himself just an ordinary beekeeper.

And, folks, a welcome back song for Prince Gautam.

Song of India

English transcribed lyrics:

Do not count the diamonds in caves of stone
Do not count the pearls in the southern sea
Of distant India so full of wonders.
There is a wondrous stone, a ruby set in the warm sea;
And on that stone there is a Phoenix, a bird with the face of a maiden
Who keeps singly songs of paradise so sweetly,
Scattering her feathers and covering the sea.
Whoever hears this bird will forget everything.
Do not count the diamonds in caves of stone
Do not count the pearls in the southern sea
Of distant India so full of wonders.

I söderns hav, i klippans dolda gömma
där vilar pärlan trolskt du såg i drömmen,
på Indiens strand
i undrens land.

Djupt i böljors vimmel
speglars röd dess himmel
över hav som tiger,
fågel Fenix stiger
höra sånger tona,
längta att försona
på de vita vingar,
högt mot rymden tvingar
lyss till ljuva sången,
snart är dagen gången.

I söderns hav, i klippans dolda gömma
där vilar pärlan trolskt du såg i drömmen
på Indiens strand
i undrens land (less)

we saw sir edmund many years ago when he gave a speech at our university . he had just been given an honorary degree and "was singing for his supper" - as i think it's called .
quite a wonderful experience !
so what can we honour him with ?

perhaps you'd like to listen to the HIMALAYA SONG ?

i think it's a proper tribute !

Thanks, hbg. That was a beautiful tribute. I love the sound of Oriental chants, and the people there are lovely. How wonderful to have seen Sir Hillary in person. He was quite modest, and I love his remark "It was there", when asked about why he chose to climb that awesome mountain.

I haven't been able to find the original lyrics to Song of India, but Raggedy and I keep looking.

Here's an updated version by Johnny Mercer.

And still the snowy Himalayas rise
In ancient majesty before our eyes,
Beyond the plains, above the pines,
While through the ever, never changing land
As silently as any native band
That moves at night, the Ganges Shines

Then I hear the song that only India can sing,
Softer than the plumage on a black raven's wing;
High upon a minaret I stand
Upon an old enchanted land,
There's the Maharajah's caravan,
Unfolding like a painted fan,
How small the little race of Man!

See them all parade across the ages,
Armies, Kings and slave from hist'ry's pages,
Played on one of nature's vastest stages.
The turbaned Sikhs and fakirs line the streets,
While holy men in shadowed calm retreats
Pray through the night and watch the stars,
A lonely plane flies off to meet the dawn,
While down below the busy life goes on,
And women crowd the old bazaars;

All are in the song that only India can sing,
Softer than the plumage on a black raven's wing;
Tune the ageless moon and stars were strung by,
Timeless song that only could be sung by
India, the jewel of the East.

edgar's cowboy songs reminded me of this one, and it shall be my goodnight song, all.

Close your sleepy eyes my little Buckaroo
While the light of western skies is shining down on you
Don't you know it's time for bed another day is through
So go to sleep my little Buckaroo.

--- Choir ---

Soon you're gonna ride the rails
Like grown up cowboys do
Now it's time that you were roundin up a dream or two
So go to sleep my little Buckaroo. mhm

Goodnight sleep tight don't you realize my little Buckaroo
It was from my little acorn that the oak tree grew
And remember Buffalo Bill was once a kid like you
So go to sleep my little Buckaroo. mhm

Goodnight, sleep tight..

Eat at Joe's

I go to work from 10:30 until 6 a.m
Raking up those dimes and quarters
Slinging eggs and ham
Scrambled,poached or over easy
Coffee black and strong
Jukebox of scratchy records
I play'em all night long

Eternal blue neon we're never closed
When the world is asleep
Darling come take a seat
You can always eat at Joe's (eat at Joe's)

Here comes old Frank Taylor smelling like old gin
Guess his wife couldn't get him sober
It's up to me again
Here's a hot top on your momma
But I'll do I guess

Eternal blue neon we're never closed
When the world is asleep
Darling come take a seat
You can always eat at Joe's (eat at Joe's)

Hello prince charming where are you dear
When will you come in and order biscuits here

Truck drivers, musicians with no place to go
I can be your domectic goddess
For an hour or so

Eternal blue neon we're never closed
When the world is asleep
Darling come take a seat
You can always eat at Joe's (eat at Joe's)

Headlines in New Zealand today, Friday 11th January 2008.

World pays tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008)
Tributes have come from across the political spectrum and from every walk of life for New Zealand's most admired and most famous citizen, Sir Edmund Hillary, who died at 9am Friday, aged 88.

Obituaries have also appeared throughout the world media, including the BBC, New York Times, The Times and major news agencies.

His death in Auckland Hospital was announced by Prime Minister Helen Clark, who paid this tribute:

Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities. In reality he was a colossus. He was an heroic figure who not only 'knocked off' [Mt] Everest but lived a life of determination, humility and generosity.

The legendary mountaineer, adventurer, and philanthropist is the best-known New Zealander ever to have lived. But most of all he was a quintessential Kiwi. He was ours - from his craggy appearance and laconic style to his directness and honesty.

All New Zealanders will deeply mourn his passing. The legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary will live on. His exploits continue to inspire new generations of New Zealanders, as they have for more than half a century.

Acting Prime Minister Michael Cullen added:
Undoubtedly Sir Ed was New Zealand's greatest son of our time. I met him first in the 1980s and then again in later years. What struck you when you met him was - he's a big man; a slow-talking Kiwi of an old fashioned variety.

He was very modest and you felt radiating out of him - here is a man in a different league to most of us in terms of what he could do and what he was. I think he will be remembered as an extraordinary man, who not only achieved a great deal from the conquest of Everest but who was a great humanitarian.

He typified how we'd like to see ourselves as a people. We should grieve but we should also celebrate that life Sir Ed had and recognise that he was a truly great man and a truly great New Zealander.

John Key, National party leader:
Sir Edmund was a role model for all New Zealanders. His legendary story as both a humanitarian and adventurer has been, and will continue to be, inspirational to generations. His legacy will not be forgotten. Sir Edmund was hugely proud to be a New Zealander and we were proud to call him one of us.

Governor General Anand Satyanand:
The loss of Sir Edmund is a loss for all those who sought to improve our world. Through his many achievements in the Himalayas, Nepal, Antarctica, India and elsewhere, Sir Edmund was an important role model. He was a leader who showed how to set goals and achieve them.

But showing the true qualities of a great leader, he used his standing as a conqueror of the world's highest peak to work tirelessly to better the lives of many people, and particularly those in Nepal. But despite his fame, Sir Edmund never lost sight of his roots and remained to his death a humble person dedicated to the service of others.

I cannot think of better words to describe this iconic man than those he used himself when he said: "I discovered that even the mediocre can have adventures and even the fearful can achieve. I had the world beneath my clumsy boots and saw the red sun slip over the horizon after the dark Antarctic winter. But for me the most rewarding moments have not always been the great moments, for what can surpass a tear on your departure, joy on your return, and a trusting hand in yours?"

Sir Edmund life was an inspiration to all New Zealanders and his memory and works will live on. We will deeply miss his trusting hand.

Good morning, WA2K radio audience.

edgar, "Eat at Joe's" Is a reminder of "Joe sent me" and the fact that sweeping laws such as prohibition simply do not work for long. I do wonder, folks, when our country will learn that. Just read this morning where Americans are likely to be subject to a new driver's licence law which amounts to a national identity.

Dutchy, welcome back, Mr. Koala and thanks for the total obit of Sir Edmund Hillary. Speaking of which, y'all, the following song could well be a campaign song for another Hillary.

Never met a girl could make me feel the way that you do.
(You're all right).
Whenever I'm asked what makes-a my dreams real, I tell em you do.
(You're outta sight).
Well tweedle dee, tweedle dum, look out baby 'cause here I come.

(Aaahh) Bringin' you a love that's true, Get ready, get ready
(Aaahh) Stop makin' love to you, Get ready, get ready.
(Aaahh) Get ready, cause here I come (on my way)

You wanna play hide and seek with love, let me remind ya.
(You're all right).
Lovin' you're gonna miss, and the time it takes to find ya.
(You're outta sight).
Fe Fi Fo Fo Fum, Look out baby now here I come.

(Aaahh) Bringin' you a love that's true, Get ready, get ready
(Aaahh) Stop makin' love to you, Get ready, get ready.
(Aaahh) Get ready, cause here I come (on my way)

If all my friends shouldn't want me to, I think I'll understand
(You're alright)
Hope I get to you before they do cause, that's how I planned it.
(You're outta sight)
Well tweedle dee, tweedle dum, look out baby 'cause here I come.

(Aaahh) Bringin' you a love that's true, Get ready, get ready
(Aaahh) Stop makin' love to you, Get ready, get ready.
(Aaahh) Get ready, cause here I come (on my way)

Well, edgar, I guess democracy just flew out the door when Americans have to have a national identity. "More light and light it grows; more dark and dark our woes."

Loved your star song, Texas.

I hope I don't get this wrong, folks, but today is Naomi Judd's birthday. It seems that she had hepatitis C but was cured.

Here's a song by the Judds.

Oooh, hoohoo, oooh, hoohoo
You said I could call on you
If I was ever lonely
You swore you'de always be my friend
And now my heart is tired
And oh my soul is hungry
I need to talk to you again
(Chorus)
Oooh, hoohoo, oooh, hoohoo, oooh
I can hear love callin' in the wind
Oooh, hoohoo, oooh, hoohoo
Open up my heart and let it in
Love's callin' in the wind
You said I may not see you
Standing there beside me
But you would be there just the same
Your hand upon my shoulder
Always there to guide me
All I had to do was call your name
(Repeat Chorus)
If I ever need to talk to you
If I ever need to talk to you
If I ever need to talk to you again
If I need to get a message through
All I ever really have to do
All I ever have to do is call your name
I can hear love callin' in the wind
Oooooh, oooooh, oooooh
Open up your heart and let it in
Love's callin' in the wind
Oooh, hoohoo, oooh, hoohoo

Well, Raggedy, I finally got it right. Razz Great duo today, puppy, and thanks again.

What a nice surprise to find out that Rod Taylor is a great painter. Here is an interesting abstract that he has done, and it will be our art for the day.

http://www.rodtaylorsite.com/images/art_abstract.jpg

"To put what you see on paper is the same as funneling what you feel through yourself as a performer. When I am working like hell as an actor, I paint. Acting doesn't suffice. Art doesn't feed me or fill the void when I am not working. If I haven't worked for six months, I can't paint.

Light intrigues me. I experiment all the time. You can't look at one of my paintings and say, 'That's a Rod Taylor.'

I wouldn't dream of selling my work. I give them to friends, to charities."

The Joker (That's What They Call Me)
The Hilltoppers (sounding amazingly like the Platters on this)

The joker is what they call me
My friends say Ive never seemed so gay
But if they only knew how much I cry for you
The laughter would surely fade away

The joker is always laughing
And so he's the gayest guy in town
He plays a winning part while memories crush his heart
Yet he goes on laughing like a clown

I tried so hard to pretend dear
That losing you meant nothing to me
But 'til you're mine once again dear
Make believe is all my life will be
Ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha

The joker, though he seems happy
Because you have found that someone new
But somewhere deep inside beneath his strange disguise
The joker is crying over you

Oh-oh-oh-oh-o-o-oh-o
That losing you meant something to me
Oh-oh-oh-oh-o-o-oh-o
Make believe is all my life will be
Ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha

edgar, Thanks for the lyrics to the Joker. I just noticed your sig line by Poe. Tell-Tale Heart, right?

This is really eerie, folks, but it's marvelous.

The clock struck midnight
And through my sleeping
I heard a tapping at my door
I looked but nothing lay in the darkness
And so I turned inside once more
To my amazement
There stood a raven
Whose shadow hung above my door
Then through the silence
It spoke that one word
That I shall hear forever more
Nevermore
Thus quoth the raven, nevermore
And still the raven remains in my room
No matter how much I implore
No words can soothe him
No prayer remove him
And I must hear for evermore
Quoth the raven, nevermore
Thus quoth the raven
Nevermore

Clancy Lowered the Boom ()
Author: Johnny Lange and Hy Heath

Chorus (audience)

Oh that Clancy
Oh that Clancy
Whenever they got his Irish up
Clancy lowered the boom
Boom Boom Boom Boom
Boom Boom Boom Boom

Clancy was a peaceful man
if you know what I mean
the cops picked up the pieces
after Clancy left the scene
he never looked for trouble
that's a fact you can assume
but nevertheless
when trouble would press
Clancy Lowered the boom

Clancy left the barbershop
with tonic in his hair
he walked into the pool room
and he met O'Reilly there
O'Raille says, "For goodness sake
now do I smell perfume?"
before you could stack
your cue in the rack
Clancy lowered the boom CHORUS

Mulrooney walked into the bar
and ordered up a round
he left his drink to telephone
and Clancy drunk it down
Mulrooney say's, "Who drunk me drink?
I'll lay him in his tomb!"
Before you could Pat
the top of your hat
Clancy lowered the boom CHORUS

O'Hallahan delivered ice
to Mrs. Clancy's flat
he'd always linger for a while
and talk or this and that
one day he kissed her
just as Clancy walked into the room
Before you could say
the time of the day
Clancy lowered the boom CHORUS

The neighborhood turned out
for Kate O'Grady's wedding night
Murphy says, "Let's have some fun!
I tink I'll start a fight!"
He wrecked the hall and kissed the bride
and pulverized the groom
before you could fling
your arm in a sling
Clancy lowered the boom CHORUS

even though there were quite a few queen's university students in the pub , everyone was on best behaviour !

ah, yes, edgar; the eye and the heart.

hbg, Clancy is a good ole Irish name. Thanks, Canada. The last drink that I had was a martini on New Year's Eve.

Now here is something for you and your Mrs from that royal band, and inspired by someone named Robert Gentle. Razz

Managua, Nicaragua is a beautiful town
You buy a hacienda for a few pesos down
You give it to the lady you are tryin' to win
But her papa doesn't let you come in

Managua, Nicaragua is a heavenly place
You ask a señorita for a 'leetle' embrace
She answers you, "Caramba! scram-ba bambarito"
In Managua, Nicaragua, that's "No"

I have been to many tropic ports
I might include even Brooklyn
If you're ever feelin' out of sorts
I'd like to recommend a look in...

Managua, Nicaragua, what a wonderful spot
There's coffee and bananas and a temperature hot
So take a trip and on a ship go sailing away
Across the agua to Managua, Nicaragua, olé
Olé, olé
Across the agua to Managua, Nicaragua, olé
