I always liked Starry, Starry Night, Letty. I particularly like Jane Olivor's version: here

A few thoughts on Elvis:
I always liked him, in the early days. There were times I preferred other artists, but I always came back to him. His recordings of Lawdy Miss Clawdy, I Want You I Need You I Love you, Old Shep, Such a Night, and ONe Night, as instances, touched me deeply. Sometime in the late 60s, his voice and choice of material changed. I loved It's Now or Never and Are You Lonesome tonight, but after that became more and more selective of his recordings. Suspicious Minds was one of his last that I truly loved. A few years ago, I bought a CD collection of everything he recorded, from the beginning, through the end of 1959. I listen to those songs on a regular basis, still. I was one of the young people that needed such artists as this, will never outgrow the need.

Tai, welcome back. That version by Jane was so mesmerizing, dear. Thanks for leading us through it.

Although many folks don't care for Van Gogh's paintings. (I didn't at one time) it's the music that brings them to life.

edgar, Elvis did Old Shep? Shocked Love that song. It was one we use to play on the piano just to make ourselves cry. Still gives me some latent tears, Texas.

From O Sole Mio

It's now or never,
come hold me tight
Kiss me my darling,
be mine tonight
Tomorrow will be too late,
it's now or never
My love won't wait.

When I first saw you
with your smile so tender
My heart was captured,
my soul surrendered
I'd spend a lifetime
waiting for the right time
Now that your near
the time is here at last.

It's now or never,
come hold me tight
Kiss me my darling,
be mine tonight
Tomorrow will be too late,
it's now or never
My love won't wait.

Just like a willow,
we would cry an ocean
If we lost true love
and sweet devotion
Your lips excite me,
let your arms invite me
For who knows when
we'll meet again this way

It's now or never,
come hold me tight
Kiss me my darling,
be mine tonight
Tomorrow will be too late,
it's now or never
My love won't wait.

Well, time for me to say goodnight, and although I won't cry myself to sleep, I think of this song often.

When I was a lad
And old shep was a pup
Over hills and meadows wed stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin hold
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and then pulled me out

As the years fast did roll
Old shep he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him jim

With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at sheps faithful head
I just couldnt do it
I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead

He came to my side
And looked up at me
And laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see

Old shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
Theres one thing I know
Old shep has a wonderful home

Also I just found out that Red Foley did "Peace in the Valley."

Goodnight, my friends

Don't Fence Me In
Sammy Kaye

Wildcat Kelly, looking kind of pale
Was standing at the Sheriff's side
And when the Sheriff said "I am sending you to jail
Wildcat threw back his head and cried

Just give me land, lots of land
Under starry skies above
Don't fence me in
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love
Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breezes
Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood tree-zes
Send me off forever, and I'll ask you please
Don't fence me in

Just turn me loose
Let me straddle my ol' saddle underneath a western sky
On my cayuse let me wander over yonder
'Til I see the mountains rise

I want to ride to the ridge where the West commences
Gaze at the moon 'til I lose my senses
Can't handle hobbles, and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in

Wildcat Kelly back in town again
Was standing at his sweethearts side
And when his sweetheart said
C'mon let's stop and settle down
Wildcat threw back his head and cried

Just give me land, lots of land
Under starry skies above
Don't fence me in
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love
Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breezes
Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood tree-zes
Send me off forever, and I'll ask you please
Don't fence me in

Just turn me loose,
Let me straddle my ol' saddle underneath a western sky
On my cayuse let me wander over yonder
'Til I see the mountains rise

I want to ride to the ridge where the West commences
Gaze at the moon 'til I lose my senses
Can't handle hobbles and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in

Don't fence me in
I said a, don't fence me in

Good morning, WA2K radio audience.

edgar, that's a great cowboy song, and often reminds me of Frost's "Mending Wall".

Wow! Keep us posted about Eiminem, buddy. Hope the rapster is all right.

It seems that today is Joan Baez's birthday. Just learned that she has a range of three octaves. This one is an old but beautiful song by her, folks.

Love, oh, love, oh careless love
You see what love has done to me

I'd love my mama and papa too
I'd love my mama and papa too
I'd love my mama and papa too
I'd leave them both to go with you

What, oh what, will mama say
What, oh what, will mama say
What, oh what, will mama say
When she learns I've gone astray

Once I wore my apron low
Once I wore my apron low
Once I wore my apron low
I couldn't scarcely keep you from my door

Now my apron strings don't pin
Now my apron strings don't pin
Now my apron strings don't pin
You pass my door and you don't come in

My sis and I used to sing that in conjunction with "Have I stayed away too long."

Ooooh, Joan Baez. My favorite.

Happy 67th Joan:

And because the power here has gone out twice this A.M., once in the middle of my reply here, I'll make this post a quick one.

Here is Joan's tribute to Pete Seeger, the composer of the song, at the 1994 Kennedy Center Awards show. I love it:

Wow! Power outage, Raggedy? The weather be weird all over with tornados in the midwest this time of year. Thanks, PA. Joan has a fabulous voice with just a suggestion of a vibrato.

I know that was Kirk Douglas sitting in the audience, and what a wonderful coincidence to realize that he played Van Gogh in the movie, Lust for Life.

Well, folks, This may be long, but I am going to do it anyway as Don McLean's American Pie is fabulous. Won't bother with the lyrics as they are a bit long.

EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO
-----------------------------
the wind started to howl at about 6 a.m. and woke me up .
windgusts to 80mph still continuing .
haven't lost power in the city but all around there are 1000's of customers without lights !
waves about 6-8 feet high on lake ontario . our local ferry-service to wolfe island is still running - but behind schedule . other smaller ferries have been told to stay tied up to docks .
keeping flashlights and candles at hand
hbg

so let's have a lusty song !

http://www.thebards.net/music/images/A_Faire_Remember-150.jpg

Quote:
Health to the Company
From: A Faire To Remember
words and music Traditional

Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may and might never all meet here again

Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may and might never all meet here again

Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well
Her style and her beauty, sure none can excel
There's a smile upon her countenance as she sits on my knee
Sure there's no one in in this wide world as happy as we

Our ship lies at harbor, she's ready to dock
I hope she's safe landed without any shock
If ever we should meet again by land or by sea
I will always remember your kindness to me

Mercy me, hbg. The weather be strange today. Calm and perfect here, Canada, but it was all interrupted by my strange neighbors who got involved in some sort of "storm fight" and the police came. YIKES!

Love the song, however. Thanks, buddy.

Noticed that John Denver's birthday is today. He, as well as Don McLean's three: Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly(that's what he meant by "the day the music died") were killed in a plane crash.

Here's La Bamba by Richie.

The Big Bopper's Wedding

And the man keeps sayin´ ´Do you take this woman
to be your awful wedded wife?´ Heh, heh

And then I started thinkin´ about no more winkin´
At the pretty little gals a-boppin´ by.
No more dancin´ and new romancin´
Lord, it made me want to sit down and cry.
Aw, no pool shootin´ and a rootin´ and a-tootin´
With the boys if I take you for my wife.
I can´t go no place, I gotta look at your face
For the rest of my dog gone life.
This is it!

Ah, honey, what am I doin´ here in the first place?
You knooooooow I don´t go for this marraige bit!
I was only kiddin´! Hahahahahahaha
And there´s your daddy sittin´ over there with a shotgun
layin´ across his lap
And a big smile on his ugly face.
And the man keeps sayin´ ´Are you gonna take this woman or aintcha?´

Well, then I started thinkin´ about no more winkin´
At the pretty little gals a-boppin´ by.
No more dancin´ and new romancin´
Lord, it made me want to sit down and cry.
Aw, no pool shootin´ and a rootin´ and a-tootin´
With the boys if I take you for my wife.
I can´t go no place, I gotta look at your face
For the rest of my dog gone life.
This is it!

Honey, what´s this jazz about Love, Honor, and Obey?
That cat´s talkin´ to me! Heheheh
And look at all these good lookin´ bride maids standin´ around, heh
Hellllllo, baaaby!
And the man in charge keeps sayin´ ´Looky here,
do you take this woman or dontcha?´

Well, then I started thinkin´ about no more winkin´
At the pretty little gals a-boppin´ by.
No more dancin´ and new romancin´
Lord, it made me want to sit down and cry.

Well, folks, I just found out that the Booper wrote this song and as an alliance with Johnny Preston, wanted him to sing it. So, here it is.

On the banks of the river stood Running Bear and Indian braves.
On the other side of the river stood his lovely Indian maid.
Little White dove was her name, such a lovely sight to see.
But their tribes fought with each other, so their love could never be.
Running bear loved Little White Dove with a love big as the sky.
Running bear loved Little White Dove with a love that couldn't die.
He couldn't swim the raging river, 'cause the river was too wide.
He couldn't reach little White dove waitin' on the other side.
In the moonlight he could see her throwing kisses across the waves.
Her little heart was beating faster, waiting there for her brave.
Running Bear loved Little White Dove...
Running Bear went in the water, Little White Dove did the same.
And they swam up to each other, through the swirling stream they came.
As their hands touched and their lips met, the raging river pulled them
down.
Now they'll always be together, in that happy hunting ground.
Running Bear loved Little White Dove...

Time for me to say goodnight and I'll make the "kissing waves" a nice bedtime melody.

Goodnight.

Please dont tell
No, no, no
Dont say that I told you so
I just heard a rumour from a friend
I dont say that its true
I'll just leave that up to you
If you dont believe I'll understand

You recall a girl
Thats been in nearly every song
This is what I heard
Of course the story could be wrong

Shes the one
I've been told
Though she's wearing a band of gold
Peggy Sue got married not long ago

*repeat till end Peggy Sue got married not long ago

Good morning, WA2K radio audience.

edgar, Peggy Sue. What in the world is so fascinating about that name. Didn't Ricky Nelson do a song about P.S.? Maybe I'm thinking of Mary Lou.

Hey, honu. Love that one, big island man. Wow! I had forgotten about Jan and Dean and, of course, The Beach Boys did some jazz stuff, too. They admired The Four Freshmen and I listened to both renditions of Their Hearts Were Full of Spring; however, The Freshmen were far better. Doing a song in four part harmony, a capella style, is quite difficult.

Well, today is Jim Croce's birthday. Strange that, because he was killed in a plane crash as well. Love the man for many reasons, one of which is that he reminds me of Santa Tomas e Lucas. This one by him is called Lover's Cross

Guess that it was bound to happen
Was just a matter of time
But now I've come to my decision
And it's a-one of the painful kind
'Cause now it seems that you wanted a martyr
Just a regular guy wouldn't do
But baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

Yes, I really got to hand it to you
'Cause girl you really tried
But for ev'ry time that we spent laughin'
There were two times that I cried
And you were tryin' to make me your martyr
And that's the one thing I just couldn't do
'Cause baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

'Cause tables are meant for turnin'
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin'
When the people and mem'ries they join aren't the same

So I'll hope that you can find
Another who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

David Bowie - Underground Lyrics

No one can blame you
For walking away.
Too much rejection.
No love injection.

Life can't be easy.
It's not always swell.
Don't tell me truth hurts, little girl,
'Cause it hurts like hell,

But down in the underground
You'll find someone true.
Down in the underground;
A land serene;
A crystal moon.
Ah..

It's only forever.
Not long at all.
Lost and lonely.
That's underground.
Underground.

Daddy, daddy, get me out of here.
Heard about a place to stay.
I, I'm underground.
Nothing ever hurts again.
Heard about a place to stay.
Daddy, get me out of here
Where nothing ever hurts again.
Daddy, daddy, get me out of here
I, I'm underground.
Sister, sister, please take me down.
I, I'm underground.
Daddy, daddy, get me out of here.

Hey, Sharon. Welcome back to our cyber radio station. The first song that I heard by David Bowie (he chose his last name from Jim Bowie of the bowie knife)was Let's Spend the Night Together. Thought it was fantastic, and paid no attention to the implications.

This one is good as well.

Starman

Didn't know what time it was, the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was layin' down some rock'n'roll lotta soul, he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no D.J. that was hazy cosmic jive

CHORUS
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me:
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

I had to phone someone so I picked on you
Hey, that's far out so you heard him too!
Switch on the TV we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window I can see his light
If we can sparkle he may land tonight
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright
