Well, folks, there's our Raggedy with a bright reflection of notables. Quite a trio today, PA.

We're looking at Ralph, Barry, and Greg. (not too familiar with him)

Thanks, gal.

Well, we've done several by Barry, so let's hear this song by a harlequin, and NO, it's not a romance Razz

Crosby, Stills & Nash
Helplessly Hoping

Helplessly hoping
Her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses
Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye

Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
He worries
Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are four for each other

Stand by the stairway
You'll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying
It's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are four for each other

How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?
How about a little Patti Paige!

How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?

How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If he has a dog he won't be lonesome
And the doggie will have a good home

How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I read in the papers there are robbers (roof, roof)
With flashlights that shine in the dark
My love needs a doggie to protect him
And scare them away with one bark

I don't want a bunny or a kitty
I don't want a parrot that talks
I don't want a bowl of little fishies
He can't take a goldfish for a walk

How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

Hey, Victor. That's our Phoenix's song. Razz Thanks for the reminder, buddy.

Here's a picture of a famous dog.

http://www.jurassicdvd.com/catalog/images/Beethoven2nd.jpg

Now, folks, this doesn't go with that St. Bernard, but was a song from Chuck Berry that polked fun at his sister's love of classical music.

Im gonna write a little letter,
Gonna mail it to my local dj.
Its a rockin rhythm record
I want my jockey to play.
Roll over beethoven, I gotta hear it again today.

You know, my temperatures risin
And the jukebox blows a fuse.
My hearts beatin rhythm
And my soul keeps on singin the blues.
Roll over beethoven and tell tschaikowsky the news.

I got the rockin pneumonia,
I need a shot of rhythm and blues.
I think Im rollin arthiritis
Sittin down by the rhythm review.
Roll over beethoven rockin in two by two.

Well, if you feel you like it
Go get your lover, then reel and rock it.
Roll it over and move on up just
A trifle further and reel and rock it,
Roll it over,
Roll over beethoven rockin in two by two.

Well, early in the mornin Im a-givin you a warnin
Dont you step on my blue suede shoes.
Hey diddle diddle, I am playin my fiddle,
Aint got nothin to lose.
Roll over beethoven and tell tschaikowsky the news.

You know she wiggles like a glow worm,
Dance like a spinnin top.
She got a crazy partner,
Oughta see em reel and rock.
Long as she got a dime the music will never stop.

Roll over beethoven,
Roll over beethoven,
Roll over beethoven,
Roll over beethoven,
Roll over beethoven and dig these rhythm and blues.

Chuck Berry
I got to meet Cuck Berry in the late 1960's. He was performing at the old Memorial Stadium when The Baltimore Colts were still here. They stoped to get some hamburgers and coffee at a place I hung out at near the stadium.

Fabulous, Victor. It's always a thrill to meet famous folks, right?

Didn't meet Chuck Berry, but I did meet Clark Terry.

How about one by him, folks

I don't go out walking
I ain't for no talking
My baby's done left me
Just a sittin' and a rockin'

If i had been scheming
Instead of just dreaming
He'd never have left me
Just a sittin' and a rockin'

Sittin all day without holding my baby
Makes me so blue and sad
If he don't hurry and come back
It's a cinch to drive me mad

Now if i don't find him
I hope you'll remind him
That i'm staying where he left me
Just a sittin' and a rockin'
All day

Don't go out a walking
And i for no talking

My baby's done left me
Just a sittin' and a rockin'
All day

If i had been scheming
Instead of just dreaming
He'd never have left me
Just a sittin' and a rockin'

Sittin all day without holding my baby
I miss my lonely papa
If he don't hurry and come back
It's a cinch to, i'll blow my toppa

Now if i don't find him
I hope you'll remind him
That i'm staying where he left me
Just a sittin' and a rockin'
Rockin' and a sittin'
Sittin' and a rockin'
All day

Hey, hbg. I don't believe anyone would be interested in listening, just looking, right?

and we are looking at a couple of champers here, folks. What's in those champagne glasses, Canada?

This was done by the Bill Evans trio, and is really a dear, dear song. This version is by Cabaret Noir

Waltz For Debby

In her own sweet world
Populated by dolls and clowns
and a prince and a big purple bear.
Lives my favorite girl,
unaware of the worried frowns
us weary grown ups all wear.
In the sun she dances to silent music,
songs that are spun of gold
somewhere in her own little head.
Someday all too soon
she'll grow up and she'll leave her dolls
and her prince and that silly old bear.
When she goes they will cry
as she whispers 'Good-bye.'
They will miss her I fear
but then so will I.

I'm assuming, hbg, that your conversation between those gals is a bit on the sarcastic side, right?

crepes are just miniature pancakes
caviar just fish eggs
cherries jubilee just red things on ice cream, but flambeau.

However, listeners, I do love Russian tea and Caesar salad.

er, Panz. I guess you like the compression.

Now as for me, folks, I like this Duke:

Cigarette holder- which wigs me
over her shoulder - she digs me
out cattin' - that satin doll
Baby shall we go - out skippin'
careful amigo - you're flippin'
speaks latin - that satin doll

She's nobody's fool so I'm playing it cool as can be
I'll give it a whirl but I ain't for no girl catching me

Telephone numbers - well you know
doing my rhumbas - with uno
and that'n my satin doll

Wow, folks. What in the world was I thinking of wandering outside and entering politics. It gets dark in there.

How about a song by Dan Fogelberg?

As The Raven Flies

I see the raven's made her nest in your eyes
She's got you thinking that her love is a prize
And you'll go under from the weight of her lies
As the raven flies...as the raven flies

She'll bring you stories that just never sound true
She'll bring you secrets that were never meant for you
And just as you come round she'll send you back through
She's in love with you...she's in love with you

Darker, darker
Don't let her talk her way into you
Lonely, lonely
You know she's only no good for you
Darker, darker
Don't let her talk her way into you
Lonely, lonely
You know she's only no good for you

I see the raven's made her nest in your eyes
She's got you thinking that her love is a prize
And you'll go under from the weight of her lies
As the raven flies...as the raven flies
As the raven flies...as the raven flies

Time Has Told Me
Nick Drake

Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
Someday our ocean
Will find its shore.

So I`ll leave the ways that are making me be
What I really don't want to be
Leave the ways that are making me love
What I really don't want to love.

Time has told me
You came with the dawn
A soul with no footprint
A rose with no thorn.

Your tears they tell me
There's really no way
Of ending your troubles
With things you can say.

And time will tell you
To stay by my side
To keep on trying
'til there's no more to hide.

So leave the ways that are making you be
What you really don't want to be
Leave the ways that are making you love
What you really don't want to love.

Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
For some day our ocean
Will find its shore.

River Man
Nick Drake

Betty came by on her way
Said she had a word to say
About things today
And fallen leaves.

Said she hadn't heard the news
Hadn't had the time to choose
A way to lose
But she believes.

Gonna see the river man
Gonnao tell him all I can
About the plan
For lilac time.

If he tells me all he knows
'bout the way his river flows
And all night shows
In summertime.

Betty said she prayed today
For the sky to blow away
Or maybe stay
She wasn't sure.

For when she thought of summer rain
Calling for her mind again
She lost the pain
And stayed for more.

Gonna see the river man
Gonna tell him all I can
'bout the ban
On feeling free.

If he tells me all he knows
About the way his river flows
I don't suppose
It's meant for me.

Oh, how they come and go
Oh, how they come and go

i'm going back to COLE PORTER - entertaining but not too risque !
i really think he had a touch for both good lyrics and smooth tunes !
this one would have been a good tune for the party on governor's island , don't you agree ?
he actually managed to get LADY ASTOR and BROCCOLI into one song ! quite an achievement .

Quote:
Artist: Cole Porter
Song: You'Re The Top!

At words poetic, I'm so pathetic
That I always have found it best,
Instead of getting 'em off my chest,
To let 'em rest unexpressed,
I hate parading my serenading
As I'll probably miss a bar,
But if this ditty is not so pretty
At least it'll tell you
How great you are.

You're the top!
You're the Coliseum.
You're the top!
You're the Louver Museum.
You're a melody from a symphony by Strauss
You're a Bendel bonnet,
A Shakespeare's sonnet,
You're Mickey Mouse.
You're the Nile,
You're the Tower of Pisa,
You're the smile on the Mona Lisa
I'm a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop,
But if, baby, I'm the bottom you're the top!

Your words poetic are not pathetic.
On the other hand, babe, you shine,
And I can feel after every line
A thrill divine
Down my spine.
Now gifted humans like Vincent Youmans
Might think that your song is bad,
But I got a notion
I'll second the motion
And this is what I'm going to add;

You're the top!
You're Mahatma Gandhi.
You're the top!
You're Napoleon Brandy.
You're the purple light
Of a summer night in Spain,
You're the National Gallery
You're Garbo's salary,
You're cellophane.
You're sublime,
You're turkey dinner,
You're the time, the time of a Derby winner
I'm a toy balloon that’s fated soon to pop
But if, baby, I'm the bottom,
You're the top!

You're the top!
You're an arrow collar
You're the top!
You're a Coolidge dollar,
You're the nimble tread
Of the feet of Fred Astaire,
You're an O'Neill drama,

You're Whistler's mama!

You're camembert.

You're a rose,
You're Inferno's Dante,

You're the nose
On the great Durante.
I'm just in a way,
As the French would say, "de trop".
But if, baby, I'm the bottom,
You're the top!

You're the top!
You're a dance in Bali.
You're the top!
You're a hot tamale.
You're an angel, you,
Simply too, too, too diveen,
You're a Boticcelli,
You're Keats,
You're Shelly!

You're Ovaltine!
You're a boom,
You're the dam at Boulder,
You're the moon,
Over Mae West's shoulder,
I'm the nominee of the G.O.P.

Or GOP!

But if, baby, I'm the bottom,
You're the top!

You're the top!
You're a Waldorf salad.
You're the top!
You're a Berlin ballad.
You're the boats that glide
On the sleepy Zuider Zee,
You're an old Dutch master,

You're Lady Astor,
You're broccoli!
You're romance,
You're the steppes of Russia,
You're the pants, on a Roxy usher,
I'm a broken doll, a fol-de-rol, a blop,

But if, baby, I'm the bottom,
You're the top!

Faded Love
Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys

As I look at the letters that you wrote to me it's you that I am thinking of
As I read the lines that to me were so sweet I remember our faded love
I miss you darling more and more every day as heaven would miss the stars above
With every heartbeat I still think of you and remember our faded love
[ fiddle ]
I think of the past and all the pleasures we've had as I watch the mating of the dove
It was in the springtime that you said goodbye I remember our faded love
I miss you darling...

dj, I love Rick Drake, Canada. Those lyrics are lovely and meaningful, especially to me, and I am quite certain they are to all our listeners. What a fresh young man. Thanks, honey. (I like the name in the second one) Razz

Of course, hamburger knows how I love Cole Porter. Thanks, buddy, and you're the tops as well. <smile>

edgar, You added the perfect touch with faded love stuff. Thanks, Texas.

For some reason, this song slipped into my mind, and it makes a great goodnight song.

All day, all night, Miss Mary Ann,
Down by the seaside, sifting sand,
All the little children love Mary Ann,
You too, will love her, Miss Mary Ann.

If you come to this island fine,
You'll love the sea and bright sunshine,
You will be enchanted with this fair land,
You'll be bewitched by Miss Mary Ann.

Goodnight, my friends and fellow music lovers

From Letty with love

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

Victor, I cannot believe that Independence Day is just around the corner. What happened? Great flag, buddy, and I think most of us know that one by Kate.

ah, edgar. Another great Johnny Mercer song. What a prolific writer and musician. Thanks, Texas, for the reminder.

It seems to me that there is a faction who would like to change our national anthem to America the Beautiful, so I did a run through the archives, and was quite surprised to find that Miss Bates did several verses to her poem that very few of us would recognize.

Here it is, folks.

America The Beautiful
Katharine Lee Bates wrote the original version in 1893. She wrote the 2nd version in 1904. Her final version was written in 1913.

Here is a note from Katharine Lee Bates:

"One day some of the other teachers and I decided to go on a trip to 14,000-foot Pikes Peak. We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view, I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse."

America the Beautiful - 1913
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America ! America !
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life !
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

I do believe that I like the shorter version better.
