Get Happy
Nat Shilkret

Forget your troubles and just, get happy
You better chase all your cares away
Sing hallelujah come on, get happy
Get ready for the judgement day
The sun is shinin' come on, get happy
The Lord is waitin' to take your hand
Shout hallelujah come on, get happy
We're going to the promised land
We're headin' cross the river
Wash your sins away In the tide
It's all so peaceful on the other side
Forget your troubles and just, get happy
You better chase all your cares away
Shout hallelujah come on, get happy
Get ready for the judgement day

Happy Days Are Here Again
Benny Meroff

So long sad times
Pull along bad times
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no one from now on
From now on

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again

Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again

I'll See You Again
Leo Reisman

[Words and Music by Noel Coward]

I'll see you again
Whenever spring breaks through again
Time may lie heavy between
But what has been
Is past forgetting
This sweet memory
Across the years will come to me
Tho' my world may go awry
In my heart will ever lie
Just the echo of a sigh
Goodbye

Artist: Fred Astaire

(verse)
Things have come to a pretty pass,
Our romance is growing flat,
For you like this and the other
While I go for this and that.
Goodness knows what the end will be;
Oh, I don't know where I'm at...
It looks as if we two will never be one,
Something must be done.

(refrain)
You say eether and I say eyether,
You say neether and I say nyther;
Eether, eyether, neether, nyther,
Let's call the whole thing off!
You like potato and I like potahto,
You like tomato and I like tomahto;
Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto!
Let's call the whole thing off!
But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
Then we must part.
And oh! If we ever part,
Then that might break my heart!
So, if you like pajamas and I like pajahmas,
I'll wear pajamas and give up pajahmas.
For we know we need each other,
So we better call the calling off off.
Let's call the whole thing off!

You say laughter and I say lawfter,
You say after and I say awfter;
Laughter, lawfter, after, awfter,
Let's call the whole thing off!
You like vanilla and I like vanella,
You, sa's'parilla and I sa's'parella;
Vanilla, vanella, Choc'late, strawb'ry!
Let's call the whole thing off!
But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
Then we must part.
And oh! If we ever part,
Then that might break my heart!
So, if you go for oysters and I go for ersters
I'll order oysters and cancel the ersters.
For we know we need each other,
So we better call the calling off off!
Let's call the whole thing off!

I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)
Guy Lombardo

I'm Confessin' that I love you
Tell me do you love me too
I'm Confessin' that I need you, honest I do
In your eyes I read such strange thing
But your lips deny they are true
Will your answer really change things
Making me blue

I'm afraid someday you'll leave me
Saying can't we still be friends
If you go you'll grieve me
All in life on you depends
I'm I guessing that you love me
Dreaming dreams of you in vain
I'm Confessin' that I love you
Over again

If I Had A Talking Picture Of You
Johnny Hamp's Kentucky Serenaders

If I had a talking picture of you
I would run it every time I felt blue
I would sit there in the gloom
Of my lonely little room
And applaud each time you whispered
I love you
Love you

On the screen the moment you came in view
We would talk the whole thing over, we two
I would give ten shows a day
and a midnight matinee
If I had a talking picture of you

It Happened In Monterey
Paul Whiteman

In my imagination I'm finding consolation
Somewhere along the Rio Grande
Sadly I'm reminiscing, madly again I'm kissing
Someone along the Rio Grande

It happened in Monterey a long time ago
I met her in Monterey in old Mexico
Stars and steel guitars and luscious lips as red as wine
Broke somebody's heart and I'm afraid that it was mine

It happened in Monterey without thinking twice
I left her and threw away the Key to Paradise
My indiscreet heart longs for the sweetheart
That I left in old Monterey

It happened in Monterey a long time ago
I met her in Monterey in old Mexico
Stars and steel guitars and luscious lips as red as wine
Broke somebody's heart and I'm afraid that it was mine

Hurricane
Dylan

Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,
Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"
Here comes the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see
And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously.
"I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands
"I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand.
I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops
"One of us had better call up the cops."
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin'
In the hot New Jersey night.

Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around.
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda **** was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that.
In Paterson that's just the way things go.
If you're black you might as well not show up on the street
'Less you wanna draw the heat.

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around
He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head.
Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead"
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the mornin' and they haul Rubin in,
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs.
The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye
Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"
Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Four months later, the ghettos are in flame,
Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game
And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody to blame.
"Remember that murder that happened in a bar?"
"Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"
"You think you'd like to play ball with the law?"
"Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that night?"
"Don't forget that you are white."

Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."
Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Bello
Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow.
You'll be doin' society a favor.
That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver.
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
He ain't no Gentleman Jim."

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much.
It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way
Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail.
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger.
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.
And though they could not produce the gun,
The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried.
The crime was murder "one," guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool's hand?
To see him obviously framed
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game.

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell.
That's the story of the Hurricane,
But it won't be over till they clear his name
And give him back the time he's done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Little White Lies
Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians

The moon was all aglow
And heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies

The stars all seemed to know
That you didn't mean all those sighs
The night that you told me
Those little white lies

I've tried but there's no forgetting
When evening appears
I've tried but there's no regretting
In spite of the tears

The devil was in your heart
But heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies

Moonlight On The Colorado
Ben Selvin

Moonlight on the River Colorado
How I wish that I were there with you
As I sit and find each lonely shadow
Takes me back to days that we once knew
We were to wed in harvest time you said
That's why I'm longing for you

When it's moonlight on the Colorado
I wonder if you're waiting for me too
We were to wed in harvest time you said
That's why I'm longing for you-ooo
When it's moonlight on the Colorado
I wonder if you're waiting for me too

More Than You Know
Ruth Etting

More than you know
More than you know
Man of my heart
I love you so
Lately I find
You're on my mind
More than you know

Whether you're right
Whether you're wrong
Man of my heart
I'll string along
You need me so
More than you'll ever know

Loving you the way that I do
There's nothing I can do about it
Loving may be all you can give
But honey I can't live without it

Oh, how I'd cry
Oh, how I'd cry
If you got tired
And said goodbye
More than I'd show
More than you'll ever know

Loving you the way that I do
There's nothing I can do about it
Loving may be all you can give
But honey I can't live without it

Summer Me, Winter Me
Lyric by Marilyn & Alan Bergman
Music by Michel Legrand

Summer me, winter me
and with your kisses
morning me, evening me
and as the world slips far away, star away
forever me with love!

Wonder me, wander me
then by a fire
pleasure me, peaceful me
and in the silence quietly whisper me
forever me with love!

Forever me with love!
And every day I'll gentle you, tender you
and oh, the way I'll velvet you, clover you.
I'll wrap you up and ribbon you, rainbow you
and shower you with shine.

Suddenly, magically
we found each other
there we were, here we are.
I plan to let you happy me,
Summer me, Winter me,
always be mine!

Leaves of Grass
by Gordon Lightfoot

The Leaves of Grass will not pass on
tho' the millstones grind them into dust.
For the earth shall give new life to them,
but only the grass will grow once more.
And the brave must fall to honor the names
of the ones who have gone before.
And the earth shall give new life to them,
but only the grass will grow once more.

If people could look into each other's eyes,
What a wonderful world this place would be.
All strife would end, we could start again,
And dreams like these must not pass on.
And the brave keep fallin' to honor the names
Of the ones who have gone before.
And the earth shall give new life to them,
But only the grass will grow once more.

Ontario, Quebec And Me
Billy Bragg

You don't need my Christmas cards
You already have my heart
This has been a holiday romance
Right from the very start

For we know how to spend the time
Who cares about the weather
We'll dance in the town till the sun goes down
And push our beds together

From the Land of the Midnight Sunglasses
To the Mountains of the Moon
You could never stay a day too long
Nor never come back too soon

And you know what a fool I am
With my short attention span
Flying in the rainy season too,
Nothing can keep me away from you

For we know how to spend the time
Who cares about the weather
We'll dance in the town till the sun goes down
And push our beds together

The Crocodile Song
by Janis Ian

There was a lady name of Annie May
She fell in love at the zoo one day
That crocodile with the big white smile
stole her very heart away
The courtship was brief but quite intense
once he got under the barbed wire fence
On the honeymoon night
she turned on the light
she said "Darling meaning no offense..."

"Good God almighty, those teeth are huge
No way I'll do the hokey pokey with you"
So they went to the dentist
who pulled all but two
Ain't it amazing what love can do
Ain't it amazing what love can do

They had a son and named him Rocky, of course
He fell for a gal on the police force
She was impressed with his bullet proof vest
so they let the romance run its course
They rented a room at the Hotel Ritz
They sat on the edge of the bed and kissed
She took off her blues, he took off his shoes
It was then she almost called it quits

She said "Good God almighty, those nails are huge
No hanky panky or it's jail for you"
so he pulled them all out
just as fast as he could chew
Ain't it amazing what love can do
Ain't it amazing what love can do

I swear every word of my tale is true
You better be careful, it could happen to you
Nobody knows where true love grows
'til they stand in someone else's shoes

Good God almighty it's a funny old world
Boys will be boys and girls will be girls
The whole dam thing is just one big zoo
and it's amazing what love can do
It's amazing what love can do
It's amazing what love can do

My Baby Just Cares For Me
Ted Weems

[Words by Gus Kahn]
[Music by Walter Donaldson]

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me

My baby don't care for
Cars and races
My baby don't care for
High-toned places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
Is something he can't see

My baby don't care who knows it
My baby just cares for me

My Future Just Passed
The High Hatters

There goes the girl I dreamed all thru school about
There goes the girl I'll now be a fool about
Ring down the curtain,
I'm certain at present
My future just passed

Don't even know if she has been spoken for
If she is tied
The ties must be broken
For life can't be that way
To wake me then break me
My future just passed
Stars in the blue, Tho' you're at a distance
You can at least do this
Sometimes a boy encounters resistance
Help Me to win this miss
Here are my arms
May she find illusion there
Look in my heart
There is no confusion there
Now that I'm loving
I'm living at last
My future just passed

The Busy Girl Buys Beauty
Billy Bragg

The busy girl buys beauty
The pretty girl buys style
And the simple girl buys
What she's told to buy
And sees her world
Through the brightly lit eyes
Of the glossy romance of fashion
Where she can learn...
Top tips for the gas cook
Successful secrets of a sexual kind
The daily drill for beautiful hair
And the truth about pain

What was Anna Ford wearing?
What did Angela Rippon say?
What will you do
When you wake up one morning
To find that God's made you plain
In a beautiful person's world?
And all those quick recipes
Have let you down
And you're 20 & 1/2; and not yet engaged
Will you go look for the boy who says
I love you let's get married and have kids

The busy girl buys beauty
The pretty girl buys style
And the simple girl buys
What she's told to buy
Through the brightly lit eyes
Of the glossy romance of fashion
Where she can learn...
Top tips for the gas cook
Successful secrets of a sexual kind
The daily drill for beautiful hair
In a mail order paradise...

The Home Front
Billy Bragg

Father mows the lawn and Mother peels the potatoes
Grandma lays the table alone
And adjusts a photograph of the unknown soldier
In this Holy of Holies, the Home
And from the TV an unwatched voice
Suggests the answer is to plant more trees
The scrawl on the wall says what about the workers
And the voice of the people says more salt please

Mother shakes her head and reads aloud from the newspaper
And Father puts another lock on the door
And reflects upon the violent times that we are living in
While chatting with the wife beater next door
If paradise to you is cheap beer and overtime
Home truths are easily missed
Something that every football fan knows
It only takes five fingers to form a fist

And when it rains here It rains so hard
But never hard enough to wash away the sorrow
I'll trade my love today for a greater love tomorrow
The lonely child looks out and dreams of independence
From this family life sentence

Mother sees but does not read the peeling posters
And can't believe that there's a world to be won
But in the public schools and in the public houses
The Battle of Britain goes on
The constant promise of jam tomorrow
Is the New Breed's litany and verse
If it takes another war to fill the churches of England
Then the world the meek inherit, what will it be worth

Mother fights the tears and Father, his sense of outrage
And attempts to justify the sacrifice
To pass their creed down to another generation
'Anything for the quiet life'
In the Land of a Thousand Doses
Where nostalgia is the opium of the age
Our place in History is as
Clock watchers,
Old timers,
Window shoppers.

(to fade)
Father mows the lawn and Mother peels the potatoes
Grandma lays the table alone
And adjusts a photograph of the unknown soldier
In this Holy of Holies, the Home
