Finally, something in politics that is worth reporting:

Jamie Foxx on Georgia Lawmakers' Minds

Published: 3/4/05

ATLANTA (AP) - Thrilled by Jamie Foxx's Oscar win for his portrayal of Ray Charles in "Ray," the Georgia House is hoping the actor will visit the Capitol and re-enact a 1979 visit by the singer.

A resolution introduced Thursday congratulates Foxx on his best-actor Oscar and invites him to the chamber to be honored.

The Legislative Black Caucus, which sponsored the idea, is hoping Foxx would perform "Georgia on My Mind" on a piano in the House chamber.

Charles performed the song for lawmakers in 1979 when it was designated the state song. Georgia politicians maintained a close relationship with the singer afterward; he performed at the 2003 inauguration of Gov. Sonny Perdue.

In his autobiography, "Brother Ray," Charles said he was deeply honored by his visit to the House. "That touched my heart," he wrote. "I cried. I truly did."

Sponsors haven't heard whether Foxx will be able to make the visit, said the resolution's author, Rep. Quincy Murphy. He said lawmakers just wanted Foxx to know how much they liked the movie.

"It's been tremendous. It has resurrected all this good will and feeling for Ray Charles," Murphy said.

Charles died last year.

When somebody loves you
It's no good unless she loves you
All the way......

I was singing that, very inexpertly, on the way to the studio.

Do any of you listeners have all the words? Be my guest and give it a try yourself, in the privacy of your own home. Feels good.

That's the chairman of the board, of course, McTag. I know it. Let me give it a try.

If somebody loves you,
It's no good unless he loves you,
All the way.

Through the good and lean years,
And through all the in between years,
Come what may.

Who knows where the road will lead us,
Who knows how much we feel.
Who knows..dah dah dah dah dah dah
That's the way it goes if it's real.

Let me think about it, Brit and I be back in a bit. Razz

All the Way

by Frank Sinatra

When somebody loves you
It's no good unless he loves you - all the way
Happy to be near you
When you need someone to cheer you - all the way

Taller than the tallest tree is
That's how it's got to feel
Deeper than the deep blue see is
That's how deep it goes - if its real

When somebody needs you
It's no good unless he needs you - all the way
Through the good or lean years
And for all the in between years - come what may

Who know where the road will lead us
Only a fool would say
But if you'll let me love you
It's for sure I'm gonna love you - all the way, all the way

Is it picky of me to note that while Frank sang the song, he did not write the music or the lyrics?

Dylans' song to Baez
With your mercury mouth in the missionary times
And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes
And your silver cross, and your voice like chimes
Oh, who do they think could bury you ?
With your pockets well protected at last
And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass
And your flesh like silk, And you face like glass
Who among them do they think could carry you ?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I put them by your gate
Oh, sad-eyed lady, should I wait ?

With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace
And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace
And your basement clothes and your hollow face
Who among them can think he could outguess you ?
With your silhouette when the sunlight dims
Into your eyes where the moonlight swims
And your match-book songs and your gypsy hymns
Who among them would try to impress you ?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I put them by your gate
Oh, sad-eyed lady, should I wait ?

The kings of Tyrus with their convict list
Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss
And you wouldn't know it would happen like this
But who among them really wants just to kiss you ?
With your childhood flames on your midnight rug
And your Spanish manners, and your mother's drugs
And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs
Who among them do you think could resist you ?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Oh, sad-eyed lady, should I wait ?
Oh, the farmers and the businessmen they all did decide
To show you the dead angels that they used to hide
But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side ?
How could they ever mistake you ?
They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm
But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm
And with the child of a hoodlum wrapped up in your arms
How could they ever, ever persuade you ?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Oh, sad-eyed lady, should I wait ?

With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row
And your magazine-husband who one day just had to go
And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show
Who among them do you think would employ you ?
Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole
With your holy medallion which your fingertips fold
And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul
Who among them do you think could destroy you ?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums
Should I leave them by your gate
Oh, sad-eyed lady, should I wait ?

Sad-eyed lady of the Lowlands. Very Happy Joan Baez sings that like an angel.
But Dys, someone told me once (was it Edgar Blythe?) that Dylan wrote that song for his wife. I still like to think he wrote it for Baez.

Msolga, it's a miracle that the tabby was in tact.

Well, it's caution to the winds time, listeners. I PMed Francis to find out if these lyrics were permissable and within the bounds of good taste, but it may be that he can't respond, given the FCCHAMSTER rules.

For Frenchy:

This song titled Sara reveals the "secret" of Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. It's straight from the horses mouth.

I laid on a dune, I looked at the sky,
When the children were babies and played on the beach.
You came up behind me, I saw you go by,
You were always so close and still within reach.

Sara, Sara,
Whatever made you want to change your mind?
Sara, Sara,
So easy to look at, so hard to define.

I can still see them playin' with their pails in the sand,
They run to the water their buckets to fill.
I can still see the shells fallin' out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.

Sara, Sara,
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life,
Sara, Sara,
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.

Sleepin' in the woods by a fire in the night,
Drinkin' white rum in a Portugal bar,
Them playin' leapfrog and hearin' about Snow White,
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.

Sara, Sara,
It's all so clear, I could never forget,
Sara, Sara,
Lovin' you is the one thing I'll never regret.

I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells,
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through,
Stayin' up for days in the Chelsea Hotel,
Writin' "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.

Sara, Sara,
Wherever we travel we're never apart.
Sara, oh Sara,
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.

How did I meet you? I don't know.
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm.
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.

Sara, oh Sara,
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress,
Sara, Sara,
You must forgive me my unworthiness.

Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore.
You always responded when I needed your help,
You gimme a map and a key to your door.

Sara, oh Sara,
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow,
Sara, oh Sara,
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

dj, Well, if you have any Irish blood at all, regardless of the rest.
Come in and sing some Irish songs and put that blood to test.

Rings on your fingers,
Bells on your toes,

some cat songs

COOL FOR CATS
(difford/tilbrook)

The indians send signals
From the rocks above the pass
The cowboys take positions
In the bushes and the grass
The squaw is with the corporal
She is tied against the tree
She doesn't mind the language
It's the beating she don't need
She lets loose all the horses
When the corporal is asleep
And he wakes to find the fire's dead
And arrows in his hats
And davy crockett rides around
And says it's cool for cats
The sweeney's doing ninety
'cos they've got the word to go
They get a gang of villains
In a shed up at heathrow
They're counting out the fivers
When the handcuffs lock again
In and out of wandsworth
With the numbers on their names
It's funny how their missus'
Always look the bleeding same
And meanwhile at the station
There's a couple of likely lads
Who swear like how's your father
And they're very cool for cats
They're cool for cats

To change the mood a little
I've been posing down the pub
On seeing my reflection
I'm looking slightly rough
I fancy this, I fancy that
I wanna be so flash
I give a little muscle
And I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash
And by the time I'm sober
I've forgotten what I've had
And ev'rybody tells me that it's cool to be a cat
Cool for cats

Shake up at the disco
And I think I've got a pull
I ask her lots of questions
And she hangs on to the wall
I kiss her for the first time
And then I take her home
I'm invited in for coffee
And I give the dog a bone
She likes to go to discos
But she's never on her own
I said I'll see you later
And I give her some old chat
But it's not like that on the tv
When it's cool for cats
It's cool for cats

Stray Cat Strut - The Stray Cats

Ooo, ooo, ooo ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo ooo
Ooo, ooo, ooo ooo

Black and orange stray cat sittin' on a fence
Ain't got enough dough to pay the rent
I'm flat broke but I don't care
I strut right by with my tail in the air

CHORUS:
Stray cat strut I'm a ladies cat
I'm a feline Casanova hey man that's that
Get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man
Get my dinner from a garbage can

I don't bother chasing mice around
I slink down the alley looking for a fight
Howlin' to the moonlight on a hot summer night
Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry
Wild stray cat you're a rebel gone guy
I wish I could be as carefree and wild
But I got cat class and I got cat style

I don't bother chasing mice around - oh, no!
I slink down the alley looking for a fight
Howlin' to the moonlight on a hot summer night
Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry
Wild stray cat you're a rebel gone guy
I wish I could be as carefree and wild
But I got cat class and I got cat style

The Cat Came Back
(Version 1)

Written By: Harry S. Miller (with later folk additions)
Copyright Unknown

Old Mister Johnson had troubles of his own
He had a yellow cat which wouldn't leave its home;
He tried and he tried to give the cat away,
He gave it to a man goin' far, far away.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The man around the corner swore he'd kill the cat on sight,
He loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamite;
He waited and he waited for the cat to come around,
Ninety seven pieces of the man is all they found.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

He gave it to a little boy with a dollar note,
Told him for to take it up the river in a boat;
They tied a rope around its neck, it must have weighed a pound
Now they drag the river for a little boy that's drowned.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

He gave it to a man going up in a balloon,
He told him for to take it to the man in the moon;
The balloon came down about ninety miles away,
Where he is now, well I dare not say.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

He gave it to a man going way out West,
Told him for to take it to the one he loved the best;
First the train hit the curve, then it jumped the rail,
Not a soul was left behind to tell the gruesome tale.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The cat it had some company one night out in the yard,
Someone threw a boot-jack, and they threw it mighty hard;
It caught the cat behind the ear, she thought it rather slight,
When along came a brick-bat and knocked the cat out of sight

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

Away across the ocean they did send the cat at last,
Vessel only out a day and making water fast;
People all began to pray, the boat began to toss,
A great big gust of wind came by and every soul was lost.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

On a telegraph wire, sparrows sitting in a bunch,
The cat was feeling hungry, thought she'd like 'em for a lunch;
Climbing softly up the pole, and when she reached the top,
Put her foot upon the electric wire, which tied her in a knot.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The cat was a possessor of a family of its own,
With seven little kittens till there came a cyclone;
Blew the houses all apart and tossed the cat around,
The air was full of kittens, and not a one was ever found.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The atom bomb fell just the other day,
The H-Bomb fell in the very same way;
Russia went, England went, and then the U.S.A.
The human race was finished without a chance to pray.

But the cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner
But the cat came back; it just couldn't stay away.
Away, away, yea, yea, yea

The Cat Came Back
(Version 2)

As sung by the New Christy Minstrals
Written By: Harry S. Miller (with later folk additions)
Copyright Unknown

Well, just like everybody you have troubles of your own
But let me tell you mister of the sorrow I have known!
I had an old grey cat, that I couldn't bear to keep
He spent the nights a-howl'n and he wouldn't let me sleep.

So I put him in a box and I tied it up quite well.
I had some fellows help me and I paid them not to tell.
We put it in a boxcar, the west-bound 7:10
The train pulled away and was never seen again.

But the Cat came back, the very next day
Yes the Cat came back and he wouldn't stay away!
Meow, kitty! Meow, so pretty!
Meow, such a pity, but the Cat came back!

So I took him to the harbor and I put in on a ship.
I bid him bon voyage! for that oceanic trip!
The captain was obligin' and glad to help us out
We tied him to the anchor so that there could be no doubt!

Well, we heard that sad report of that might storm at sea
And though it may sound heartless, I was happy as could be!
The paper said the ship went down beneath a heavy gale
And not a single soul was left to tell the awful tale!

But the Cat came back, the very next day
Yes the Cat came back and he wouldn't stay away!
Meow, kitty! Meow, so pretty!
Meow, such a pity, but the Cat came back!

So I gave him to a scientist, destined for the moon.
The Cat was used for ballast in an outer space balloon!
I guess you know what happened, that balloon's up there still,
And early that next morning, guess what came across the hill??

(Meow! That's right.)

Now, everyone in town was sworn to shoot that Cat on sight.
With that crazy cat around you couldn't sleep at night!
We even formed a posse just to hunt that critter down!
You could hear the guns a-blazin' as they ran him out of town!

But the Cat came back, the very next day
Yes the Cat came back and he wouldn't stay away!
Meow, kitty! Meow, so pretty!
Meow, such a pity, but the Cat came back!

The Cat Came Back
(Version 3)

As recorded by Marais and Miranda

Old Mr. Johnson had trouble all his own
He had a yellow cat that wouldn't leave his home
He tried in every way to keep that cat away
Took him up to Canada and told him for to stay

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

On a telegraph wire the birds were sitting in a bunch
He saw an even number, said he'd have 'em for his lunch
Climbed softly up the pole until he reached the top
Put his foot upon the 'lectric wire, tied him in a knot

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

This cat had company out in the backyard
Somebody threw a boot and threw it awful hard
Hit the cat behind the ear and he thought it was a slight
And down came a brick and knocked him out of sight

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They threw him in the kennel where the dog was asleep
And the bones of cats lay piled in a heap
That kennel burst apart and the dog flew out the side
With his ears chewed off and holes in his hide

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They sneaked him in a shop with the butcher not around
And they dropped him in the hopper where the meat was ground
The cat despaired with a blood-curdling shriek
And that shop's hamburger tasted furry for a week

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They put him in a cotton sack and gave him to a girl
Who'd started on a bicycle all around the world
Well, over there in China a terrible wreak was found
She's singing now in heaven with the angels all around

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

Now this cat was a terror and they thought it would be best
To give him to a feller who was going way out west
Train ran round a curve and hit a broken rail
Not a blessed soul aboard that train lived to tell the tale

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

The cat was a possessor of a family all its own
With seven little kittens till there was a cyclone

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They gave the cat to a man in a balloon
And told him to give him to the man in the moon
But the balloon it busted and everybody said
Ten miles away they picked the man up dead

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

At last they found a way this cat to really fix
They put him in an orange crate on highway 66
Come a ten ton truck with a twenty ton load
Scattered pieces of that orange crate a mile down the road

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They put him on a boat bound for Sidneytown
They thought with all that rain there he'd surely drowned
When the rain came down for the 92nd day
That whole darn city just a floated out the bay

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

The farmer on the corner said he'd shoot that cat on sight
Loaded up his shotgun full of nails and dynamite
And he hid in the garden till the cat came round
But 97 pieces of that man were all they found

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They put him on the White House lawn, I'll tell the reason why
With all the golfballs flying, they thought he'd surely die
Well the very next morning, what do you think they found
64 squirrels lying dead upon the ground

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

Gave him to a little boy with a dollar note
Who was going out to sea in an open boat
They tied a rock around his neck, it must have weighed a pound
Now they're dragging up the river, cause the little boy was drowned

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

They took him down to Cape Canaveral and they put him into place
And they shot him in a satellite way up into space
They thought that the cat was beyond human reach
And then they got a phone call from Miami Beach

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

An H bomb fell just the other day,
A bomb fell in the very same way
Russia went, England went, then the USA
The whole human race gone without a chance to pray

But the cat came back the very next day
The cat came back, they thought he was a goner
But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away

The Cat Came Back
(Version 4)

Written By: Harry S. Miller (with later folk additions)
Copyright Unknown

Freddie Wilson had a cat that he didn't want to keep,
He offered it for sale, but no-one would buy it cheap.
He called upon the preacher to ask for his advice,
The preacher said just leave him here, for it would be so nice

But the cat came back, he wouldn't stay away,
He was sitting on the porch on the very next day;
The cat came back, he didn't want to roam,
The very next day he was home sweet home.

Freddie put the cat on board a ship was headed for Ceylon,
The ship was overloaded, about forty thousand ton;
Not many miles from shore that gallant ship went down
There wasn't any doubt about it, everybody drowned

But the cat came back, he wouldn't stay away,
He was sitting on the porch on the very next day;
The cat came back, he didn't want to roam,
The very next day he was home sweet home.

Freddie put the cat on board with a man in a balloon,
Who would give the cat away to the man up in the moon,
The balloon it didn't rise, it burst in bits instead,
Ten miles away they found the man stone dead

But the cat came back, he wouldn't stay away,
He was sitting on the porch on the very next day;
The cat came back, he didn't want to roam,
The very next day he was home sweet home.

Freddie Wilson took his gun and he hid behind a bush,
In the barrel of his gun lead and powder he did push.
He aimed it at the spot where the cat would appear;
The next day all they found was Freddie Wilson's ear

But the cat came back, he wouldn't stay away,
He was sitting on the porch on the very next day;
The cat came back, he didn't want to roam,
The very next day he was home sweet home.

Now the cat sat on the porch and he ate a piece of cheese,
An Irishman came by, he was feeling well at ease.
The cat he was a-smiling, for he was fully fed;
The Irishman sang "Britannia!" and the cat fell dead.

But his ghost came back, he wouldn't stay away,
He was sitting on the porch on the very next day.
His ghost came back, he didn't want to roam,
He haunted Freddie's house and his home sweet home.
