Yes, Larry, I did mean the Quiet American, although the Silent American may be a slip of the keyboard, indicating my deeply held wish.
It was a excellent movie, in my humble opinion.
Loved this film:

he was a very special fellow I think.
Thank you, Hebba, for reviving this thread!
as many of you have written, it's very hard to list favorites for me as well, but I will jot a few that just come to mind:
West Side Story
Cidar House Rules
Gentleman's Agreement
Antwone Fisher
Memento
Jerry McGuire
Fallen
The Commitments
Billy Elliot
Grand Canyon
and so many more ...
oops, forgive my lack of manners:
WELCOME BRUNT
Oh man...so many...here are a few, I'll add later:
The Commitments
Frailty
Ghost World
Harold and Maude
Silence of the Lambs
Ran
Atanajurat, the Fast Runner
Jackass: The Movie
An oldie, but a goodie that I didn't mention in my earlier post to this thread: Sunday Bloody Sunday.
A bit dated now, but still very moving, funny & clever.
Anyone else seen it?
I have but a long time ago.I was too young to realize that a man could actually be in love with another man.Was it not Schlesinger who directed?
hebba
Yes, I think it was Schlesinger who directed Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Delightful movie, even though a bit dated now. I hired it not so long ago & was reminded of what a terrific actor Peter Finch was. He is totally credible experiencing love, pain & sadness so stoically. I could have wept for his desolation & loneliness.
And Glenda Jackson does a wonderful Glenda Jackson at her wittiest! .... I was very moved by her efforts at keeping her sadness about the imminent loss of her young sculptor to herself. She was always watching, hoping, then feeling resigned.
Unfortunately the 3rd of the trio - the young man, Murray ? - didn't come up as well in my recent viewing of the film. He didn't seem to be worth the deep feelings that Jackson & Finch had for him. Very shallow. But maybe that was the point?
Another aspect that I found very funny were some hilarious scenes with some very trendy Swinging London children that Jackson & her friend were babysitting.
Anyway, worth a second look on video, if you're feeling a bit nostalgic about London in the 60s.
I´ll watch ANYTHING if it´s about London in the 60´s.Twice.

I dunno, loads of those already listed. But 4 of mine are -----
HIGH NOON --- I saw it 3 or 4 times in a week way back when.
AFRICAN QUEEN ---- I can still watch it even now
LETHAL WEAPON #1 ---- Because it's there and it's good for insomniacs
DIE HARD #1 ----- Because it's there and it's still in Blockbusters
Some of the films already mentioned I have not seen. But of the ones I have seen, a big thumbs up. I will list my own favorites in no particular order, but sometimes with a brief explanation.
Where Eagles Dare - Richard Burton
Terms of Endearment - 4 hanky tear jerker
Sixth Sense - Mainly because I didn't see it coming
Monster's Ball - very dark, but Halle Berry was brillant
Sling Blade - Billy Bob Thornton
Carrie - the last scene made me jump out of my seat
Looking for Mr. Goodbar - First date with my husband
Chicago - I normally don't go in for musicals, but this one is hot
Monty Pyton: In Search Of The Holy Grail - My brother and I can recite whole scenes by heart.
Shadow of the Vampire - Great take on the German Silent Movie
The Lion in Winter - Kate Hepburn and Peter O'Toole
Raising Arizona - I think I have a crush on the Coen brothers
Blood Simple - also by the Coen brothers, was re-released about 4 years ago.
Glory
The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming - still makes me laugh
Odd Couple
Grumpy Old Men
Twelve Angry Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Loved One - Very dark comedy based on Forest Lawn
Silverado - Classic Western
Klute - Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland
Saving Private Ryan - It moved me because it made my Father, and a lot of WWII vets cry
Mash - pretty fathful to the book
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - Can't beat Jack N.
The Shining - The critics hated it, but I like it.
Gangs of New York - Yes Larry, I know you don't like this one, but I've seen it 3 times
Harvey - With Jimmy Stewart and a nine foot tall invisible white bunny
Arsentic and Old Lace - Cary Grant was great in this screw ball comedy
