When I attach the ground wire to an outlet feeding outdoor lights, it trips the gfci. If I leave the ground off I get 120volts to the further most outlet in the chain.

This is a new problem. The circuit has worked fine for 2 1/2 years when all of a sudden I have this problem. The romex wire is buried in pvc tubing. Any ideas why it suddenly has a short?
