i am turning 16 in one month and my parents lost legal custody of me because of abuse. my grandparents now have full temporary legal custody. we wanted to know if it was okay if i was able to stay with a friend over the weekend, we have papers stating that my grandparents have full legal custody. we have a court hearing coming up next month on the 29th. Is it legal for me to spent the weekend with friends before my grandparents gain full permanent custody? Thanks!

@TinyTiger,
If you have papers stating your Grandparents have custody then your Grandparents have custody. If your Grandparents are allowing you to remain with your parents (which if there was abuse, that's kinda weird) then it's still ultimately up to your Grandparents unless they have extended permission to your parents to make those kinds of decisions for you.

@TinyTiger,
Are you currently living with your grandparents and wanting to spend the weekend away?

Have your grandparents checked with their lawyer about this?

Things can vary by jurisdiction so it's best that a real legal opinion is obtained.

@TinyTiger,
Yes, your grandparents have custody. They are the boss. That is what custody means (whether it is temporary or permanent doesn't matter).

If they say it is OK to stay with a friend, then you can say over with a friend. If your grandparents want to talk to a lawyer, that it between them and the lawyer.

If they say it is ok, than it is ok.
