SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian police apologized on Thursday after inadvertently sending Internet images of child pornography to 1,800 schools while trying to warn principals about children at risk of abuse.

The mistake came during a police crackdown on child pornography that has so far resulted in more than 200 arrests, including police, teachers, clergy and the owner of a child-care center, after more than 400 raids.

Police assistant commissioner Graeme Morgan said human error had resulted in "partial images" of child pornography being sent to 1,800 government-run schools across New South Wales, Australia's most populous state.

"This is a very unfortunate incident and we deeply regret it happened. A full internal investigation is underway," Morgan said in a statement.

Morgan said the images of three young girls had been sent to the state's Department of Education (news - web sites). The photographs sent by police and found during the arrest of a man suspected of possessing child pornography, had been cropped to show only the girls' faces.

However, inadequate software had been used in the cropping process and the full images remained embedded in some files, which were later opened by a handful of recipients, he said.

"This resulted in pornographic material being accidentally sent to the department for distribution to school principals in an effort to identify the children at risk," Morgan said.

He said police have made an urgent request for all unopened files to be deleted and for printed images to be destroyed. About 80 percent of the e-mails have had already been opened, he said.

Morgan said police have so far been unable to locate the girls who were in the photographs.

A landmark bridge in Indonesia is in danger of collapse because too many people are urinating on one of its steel pillars. The Ampera bridge has begun to lean at an angle because of corrosion by the acidic fluid.

This just makes me ashamed to live here in Tarana:

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian police have charged two men with stealing a puppy from Toronto's humane society, while using in-line skates to speed their escape.

Police said on Wednesday the two men entered the animal shelter, snatched a four-month-old Staffordshire terrier mix from its cage, and quickly skated out.

The theft was captured on camera.

One man was arrested after he was seen walking the puppy, named Sarah, on a nearby street. A second man turned himself in to police.

The two are charged with theft and possession of stolen property under C$5,000 ($4,200).

I suppose that's a question for dlowan's ethical dilemma thread. However, the humane society gives pets away. In fact, they are desperate for people to come in and claim a pet. Ergo, the theft was completely unnecessary.

Oh, I see. Here (Oz) you have to pay around $100 for a pet that's been de-loused, washed, checked, immunized, micro-chipped, etc. .... I'd have trouble affording that myself. Though stealing a pet, under any circumstances is not so great an idea, I agree ...

Well, yes, there are some fees for medical stuff, but still....stealing a potential pet...it just ain't right. We have pet insurance though, which covers a lot of what we put out in vet fees. Here is the official site: http://www.torontohumanesociety.com/about.html Look at all the widdle faces....

Now this is curious:

LONDON (Reuters) - The world's first known piece of printed pornography, described as the "quintessence of debauchery," is expected to reach up to 35,000 pounds ($65,040) when it is auctioned next month.

"Sodom," penned in the mid-1670s, has been attributed to John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester and is described by auction house Sotheby's as a "closet drama rather than for the stage" with pornography "in almost every line."

"We believe this is the first printed pornography in English literature, a unique copy of the quintessence of debauchery," Peter Beal, Sotheby's book specialist said.

"It is one of the most notorious publications in literature and makes most pornography written 300 years later seem tame."

The book centers on the decision made by a lustful King to "set the nation free" by allowing "buggary" to be "used thro' all the land" and then details the dire consequences.

The book, the only surviving copy, will be auctioned on December 16.

They do good work, completely on donations, no government funding. I suppose that's why I was so disgusted by the story I found.
