Hello, so I'm 17 from England. I currently go to college and I would like to leave for personal reasons. If I were to leave college at this age, and seek and then get a part time job, would this legally be ok? or do I HAVE to be in full-time education until i'm 18?
@hlgalore,
So you are shackled to your parents expectations of becoming a college grad? At 18 you can do what you want.
@seac,
Well like I said, personal reasons, but they respect whatever decision I'll make. I'm just wondering if I can legally quit college at 17 and just work.
@hlgalore,
Talk to a counsellor at your college. They will have the best information for you and will be able to help you through whatever process you decide on.
@hlgalore,
Oh, college in England is like high school in the US. You want to quit while you are a senior student to start work. Not a good thing to do, considering how many jobs require that you finished schooling.
@seac,
I don't know anyone who thinks it was a good idea for them to quit college (or US high school). It makes it very difficult to find a decent job with the chance for advancement.
I know a few people who regret it.
Unless its changed you leave school at 16 there & then have the option to go to college which is what I did. As I say unless things have changed there is no "legal requirement" to go on. Your parents on the other hand may have something to say about it as I am sure they want you to get the best start in life. As to whether in practical terms it will give you a better "start" is another question. I used to know of a kid who went to a very respected private school & went on to university & ended up being a used car salesman. My own theory is that you can be very well educated but you have to be "streetsmart" as well.
