Sorry to hear the days in Sydney were so bad...maybe it'll improve now that you are back on your own turf...you've been missed.
Welcome home lezzles.
<now, if I can post that pic hamburger was asking about you'll really be smiling>
Thanks to you all - I feel better already for you kind thoughts.
A couple of questions came up in conversation on the weekend that you American people could answer for me.
Do you eat pumpkin other than in pumpkin pie?
Do you roast potatoes? (ie, peel them, sit them in the baking dish with the meat joint, in or basted with, oil, dripping or whatever)
I know a number of persons who make and/or eat pumpkin bread and this is actually the only way I can tolerate the taste of pumpkin (I do not like pumpkin pie...although I do like pumpkin pie crusts especially when they are slightly singed). There is also pumpkin soup, which I have not had but have seen and smelled, neither sensation doing much for me. I suspect there may be other pumpkin recipes out there...I just haven't ever looked for them.
When it comes to potatoes, I have cooked them in so many ways that it would be impossible to list them all here. I have boiled them in water, in oil, in tomato sauce, and I have placed them into the oven in a pan with a roast, in a pan with a chicken, in a baking tray with pork and both with and without cheese, set them in a baking pan with onions, surrounded them with other potatoes...the list is nearly endless. Is there any wrong way to cook a potato? The only difference is that I prefer to leave the peel (skin) on...that has always been one of the added pleasures of tater noshing.
Potatoes are fantastic. There are just so many ways of cooking them.
Years ago my aunt (who had married a US serviceman during WWII) came home on a visit. Her husband had a potato farm in Idaho. When we sat down to a meal of roast lamb, roast vegetables she said "I haven't had a baked potato or baked pumpkin since I went to America - they just don't eat them like that".
I have often wondered whether this was just a local thing or the norm for America in general.
We too, of course bake potatoes in the jacket, but I have often thought that if you did not know the delights of a potato crisp and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside you were really missing out.
Similarly with pumpkin. The only references I have ever come across with regard to America, have been to pumpkin pie, which unfortunately I disliked immensely - yet I love roast pumpkin.
The subject came up in a discussion with some cousins on the weekend and hey presto, I realised I could get an answer for this long-standing question on A2k.
Thanks, Sturgis, your comments are much appreciated.
uploading something for lezzles

the little boy in this pic is the father of the little boy with the basket of kittens on the previous page - and that little boy with the kittens is the father of the little girl with the Steiff bunny
the apples didn't fall far from that rocking horse riding tree
They are great, ehBeth! The family likeness has certainly been passed from generation to generation! Isn't it funny to see how seriously children viewed having their photos taken in earlier years?
My upset on the weekend stemmed from a disagreement with my beloved son. I still don't know what was behind it, I am trying to contact him to talk through it, but he is "unavailable". All I know is that it was unnecessary and has rocked me. I think there is a power play by his fiancee going on behind the scenes - I hope not, but it's all I can come up with. So please bear with me if I say strange things - I'm hurting.
You just stay strong lezzles and feel free to yell, scream and cry or laugh, hoot and holler as you walk through this matter.
(and don't fret over saying strange things...I do that all the time, even without the hurt)
what he ^^^ said
hooting and hollering is encouraged here - and so is the uttering of strange things - it's why we keep coming back to A2K - what did s/he say NOW?
Again, thanks! I will Not let this get me bitter and twisted. I have weathered far worse. It is the fear of not resolving the dilemma that cripples. And of course -
Fear is the mindkiller.....
Yes, I'm hoping you are Ok and that things have eased. Do let us know.
I'm surviving, but can't get any sort of response from the boy. He's not into drink, drugs, fast cars or illegal activities - has been a good friend as well as good son always. I can only be patient, keep the lines of communication open, and hope and pray he lets me know what the problem is. I will not give up on him!
Thanks so much for your interest. It makes a huge difference.
Has anybody heard from Sturgis lately?
Sturgis hasn't posted since February 27th.
I've been missing his 'voice'.
I hope all is well with him.
Clary has not posted for ages either. Any one know anything there?
I think Clary is in a villa in Southern Italy somewhere, if I recall correctly.
Thanks Dag! Actually, I've just been checking through some of her old posts - she was off somewhere (Spain?) for two months and would be out of touch for two months. That was a month ago but it seems a lot longer! No doubt we'll hear all about it when she does get back.
Lezzles, I sincerely hope everything works out ok with your son.
