We used to do that down on the beach in Monterey or down the coast in Big Sur. There'd be a bunch of us down on the sand, watching the sunset, playing Doors music or something from the Cream album---- did I mention this was 1967?--and

oh boy, here I go...

some bunch of the girls in bikinis
with dreams in their hair
would announce that they all wanted to sleep on the beach
but there could be no hankypanky hunky punky oo la la.

And all the guys would say 'yeah, sure. yeah, sure'

We'd make a fire.
We'd sing.
We'd sing about how there once was a girl
one time a long ago time
but now
broken hearted
we were alone and out of love.....
and we'd cuddle under the blankets
with two
or even three of the local girls
in their bikinis
with sleepy eyes and dreams in their hair
who did not want to have
any of the punky hunky hanky hinky oo la la
the girls
in their bikinis,
but who did want to know if we thought
if
one of their breasts looked bigger than the other.

(It was 1967,
August
and the world could end on Wednesday.)

We slept

sometimes.

Sometimes we stayed awake
and looked at the stars
and listened to the music of the
girls in their bikinis
and the yeah sure guys
over there in the pitchy pitchy dark.

The stars were incredibly large.

The musical moans
were sweet and lonely

and the sky moved across the clouds.

....

It was always colder in the morning.
Mouths dry from the grass
and the sleeping and the dreams.

Twice,
I left my wallet on the sand
and twice
someone brought it to the nearby diner
just in time
for me to pay
for my breakfast
and the breakfast of
(still with sleep and dreams in their hair)
some girls in their bikinis.

We did the exact same thing, Joe, except it was in the cornfields and the women wore parkas.

Are we sharing songs now? I used to get drunk and play a little guitar every once in a while...

This one is called "Eddie Needs a New Pair".

Grampa died...right there in his double wide
Eddie came to the funeral and stood by my side
He said, "Look at those shoes on grampa's feet"
Just then I turned around and there was Uncle Pete
And there was Aunt Helen and cousin Sue
Everybody staring at grampa's shoes
I said "now Eddie...time to make our move"
and we moved up to the casket, nice and smooth...

Because Eddie Needs a New Pair of Shoes...
Yeah Eddie needs
Eddie needs
Eddie Needs a New Pair of shoes...

As we approached Grampa's shoes
I turned around and knew I had to choose
It was fight or flight, life or death
So I grabbed a broomstick and bashed my cousin Beth
She fell to the ground with blood in her eyes...

He he...it goes on from there to further describe the ensuing family brawl over grampa's shoes...

I once played this song at an open mic in this dingy dumpy place called the BMW bar somewhere downtown on 9th Avenue...ha ha, what a freakin' shithole that place was.

If if remember correctly, Bella Dea, your guess was 7.

You've been out of the competition for quite some time now.

Littlek, I wrote that song with my old roommate when we were drunk one night. She told me a story about her aunts trying to steal some relative's shoes out of the casket and I kind of took her story and ran with it. Drinking and writing stupid songs used to be a specialty of mine.

Okay, here's the rest of it, as well as I can remember, starting from "It was fight or flight..."

...It was fight or flight, life or death
So I grabbed a broomstick and bashed my cousin Beth
She fell to the ground with blood in her eyes
but still nobody there was giving up on that prize
No, grampa's shoes, we all agreed
were the coolest-looking shoes we ever did see

But Eddie Needs a New Pair of Shoes
Yeah, Eddie Needs a New Pair of Shoes

While we were fighting, grampa's shoes began to glow
and that glow turned into a light and that light began to grow
and in that light a figure appeared and noone was surprised
to see grampa floating there with a teardrop in his eyes
Eddie ran up to him and stood by his side
He said, "gramp, you know I love you and I'm sorry that you died"
Grampa looked down at us and this is what he said...
"Stop all the fighting...give the shoes to Ed!"

Because...Eddie Needs a New Pair of Shoes
Yeah, Eddie Needs a New Pair of Shoes

Now it's been fifteen years and I never saw grampa again
But yes I still see Eddie he comes by every now and then
And I always look down at the shoes on his feet
and I can almost hear grampa singin' soft and sweet

"Eddie Needs...Eddie Needs...Eddie Needs a New Pair of Shoes..."

Hehe...fun song.
