You would think that death would top the list of fears?

Extinguish of self is near the top of my list.

Out living my children.

A fear of mine about death, is that I fear dying a terrible slow painful death.

I think people are generally dishonest about their fears, even to themselves. For instance, when they are in a situation where they feel they can be honest, many admit they fear speaking in front of large numbers of people.

@snood,
I fear standing in front of a large crowd of beings I imagine are naked more than I fear standing naked in front of one imaginary being.

I fear incorporeal self-awareness AKA the singularity if it chooses to go the Skynet route.

@Fil Albuquerque,
I don't believe there is any difference between rational behavior and irrational behavior.

Humans aren't rational (and that includes you and me). In a couple of decades we will be dead and a short time after that no one will remember us any more. That we think that our behavior even matters at all is irrational.

For that matter fear is irrational.

No fear CAN and often is irrational.
But fear evolved with the purpose of making you aware of danger just like pain did. There is a distinction between panic and an healthy dose of sensible fear. You assume the cliché is simple but it is not.

@Fil Albuquerque,
Please define the word "rational". Evolved instincts obviously can increase the life expectancy of any organism. That is because the mechanism of evolution is directed by the survival prospects of an oganism (which is quite often correlated with life span). But increased lifespan is not "rationality" is it?

I believe that the concept of "rationality" is made up. Humans invented it to pretend that what they are doing is somehow important in the grand scheme of things. This is is a myth of course. It doesn't mean anything.

Or can you define what "rational" means in a way that doesn't rely on myth (i.e. things that aren't based on provable fact).

The Earth has been around for 5,000,000,000 years. You will be dead in 1 100,000,000th of that no matter how you behave. Keep that in mind when you try to tell me what "rational" means.
