Just popped in to say I told you so.

And keep an eye out for Noel Pearson's work placement scheme in the papers.

PS Olga, the election could be put off until next year if it suits Howard. Creep.

Yes! Very Happy :

Newspoll gives Labor 12-point lead
February 5, 2007 - 11:24PM/SMH

Labor has extended its lead on the Coalition and Kevin Rudd trails John Howard by just one point in the preferred prime minister stakes, a new poll suggests.

The latest Newspoll, published in The Australian newspaper, shows Labor's primary vote has surged three percentage points to 47 per cent, up from 44 per cent a month earlier.

The Coalition's primary vote dropped one point to 38 per cent.

It was Labor's highest primary vote in Newspoll since the Howard government was at lowest ebb in 2001 after the introduction of the GST and before the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

On a two-party preferred basis, Labor now has a commanding 12-point lead - 56 per cent compared with 44 for the Coalition.

Labor's two-party preferred vote jumped one percentage point over the month, while support for the Coalition fell by a point.

The honeymoon for Mr Rudd as Opposition Leader is continuing, with his personal support ratings outpacing his predecessor Kim Beazley in the contest against Mr Howard for preferred prime minister.

The Newspoll, conducted over the weekend, puts Mr Rudd's standing as preferred PM unchanged at 39 per cent, compared with 40 per cent for Mr Howard.

The prime minister - who will seek a fifth term in an election to be called late this year - brushed off the results, saying he had been behind in polls before.

"I was in that situation broadly speaking in 2001 and also in 2004," Mr Howard told ABC TV's Lateline program.

"The main issue will still be who's got the experience and the capacity to guarantee the continuation of Australia's economic prosperity.

"That will still dominate the election campaign like no other issue."

John's first day back in parliament yesterday did not go down at all well ... he will have to do better! It's an election year, John, & the polls are not looking brilliant for the Libs right now.
What strategies will bring the electorate around? Can't you just hear him thinking, mulling, plotting the next moves? Laughing :
Threatening interest rate rises under a Labor government won't work. Forget it. ... not after what happened to interest rates almost immediately after the last election campaign! Those mortgage holders in the outer suburbs have no doubt not forgotten that!
... And even his own back-benchers are starting to get hot under the collar about the government's pathetic performance over David Hicks.
...Will the "water summit" & waffling on about "carbon trading" save his credibility on environmental issues? The polls are telling him that the environment, water, climate change, etc are hot issues right now! Yes, way to go!: JH the enviironmentalist!

Yes, you are left out
Out of there without a doubt
'Cause baby, baby, baby, you're out of time

Will Malcolm Turnbull (new minister for the environment) be able to restore JH's credibility on issues environmental? Hmmm ... his first performance in the job in parliament yesterday was not exactly inspiring. Rather stilted, stuffy & underwhelming, actually. I notice that JH is doing most of the talking to the media today. He seems pretty keen to restore his credibility after yesterday's gaffe. :

BTW Malcolm Turnbull & Peter Garrett (ALP/shadow minister for the environment) have agreed to a debate on the 7:30 Report (tonight?).
It'll be interesting to see how these two millionaires perform in their new jobs.

Can you believe it? The environment could be the No 1 election issue! Surprised

Please don't ever think, msolga, that your posts here are going unnoticed. I read them all and I think a number of other of folks do also.

Do you think that Mr Howard will call for new elections this year?

Thanks, RJB!
Sometimes, ya know, I wonder .....
Yes, he HAS to call an election this year. This is an election year! (God, these new polls are sooooooo heartening, I can tell you! At last, at last, at last!!! Very Happy )
The thing is, the prime minister can choose the date of the election. I think this can be at any time after August? (someone correct me if I'm wrong here.) So obviously, he calls it at a time that suits his party!
As you can see, RJB, JH is in a wee bit of bother at present! Expect scare campaigns, character assassinations, lies, smears & the whole damn thing! The closer it gets to when he must declare the election date is going to be interesting, VERY interesting!

Is it tonight, dadpad? I'm not certain. (Is there a 7:30 Report on Friday night? Confused ) Jon Faine mentioned the debate on 774 (ABC Radio) yesterday & I missed the actual timing of it. If it was last night, I went out & missed it, but I suspect there would have been some reporting in the media if it was ....?

Anyway, Malcolm had better polish up on the common touch (as a communicator) after his maiden speech in parliament. It made him sound like a stuffy ol' git, not the hope of the Liberal Party! I don't think Peter Costello has much to worry about, judging by that performance!Laughing

Meanwhile ... back at Liberal Party HQ, the brains trust plots at how to discredit TinTin (aka Kevin Rudd, Australian Labor Party leader & opposition leader, whose having a dream run in the polls). What can they pin on TinTin? I mean, he's a committed Christian, has a squeaky clean image & has a few brains to bless himself with, too!
Last night I read that Kevin Andrews described him (at some Lib/business folks meeting) as a "danger to democratic capitalism"! Wow! Tough words, Kevin!Laughing )
