So I have one of these and there's a light at the switch when it's turned on. Is it normal for the light to sort of flicker at times or is that a problem?

I don't know, but I have a surge protector whose light has been flickering for years, apparently without causing a problem.

Guaranteed safe as long as it isn't plugged in.
Given your other threads on electrical woes, you might be best off investing in a new cord. That will eliminate any doubt you may have.
