My nurse has recommended Doxycycline to me for my trip to South America next year. I wondered if any of you have taken this and if so, did you suffer any side effects? The tablets I took last time made me feel ill and lose my appetite and I'd rather this didn't happen again.
Hi Travelbug,
It's my understanding that there are two different types of meds for malaria and where you are going determines which one you use. I visited the Amazon jungle in Peru and took Malarone, started 2 days before travel to the Amazon and for 7 days after. I had no side effects. Have you read anything on the net about doxycycline? Take a look here.

"Studies have shown Malarone to be 98% effective in prevention of malaria which is as effective as mefloquine or doxycycline."
You might want to do some reading here as well from a search at
www.google.com
Doxycycline + malaria

This is who I used for all my immunizations and meds. They were most helpful with lots of travel info.
