Sounds like great advice, Colorific. In painting into (instead of out of) our emotional states we are using our full selves as resources for creative expression. I tend to think the abstract expressionists exaggerated the degree to which they were "ex-pressing" their inner lives onto their canvases, just as surrealists were not just reflecting their dreams/unconsciousness but, instead, creating dream-like and unconscious-like images. Nevertheless, while painting our state of mind has to be given some degree of rein if we wish not to be stilted in the work.
