I was just looking at that exact thing.

Lots of 'em passed. Stupid stupid stupid.

Yep, and the Virginia one was close compared to some others. Banning gay marriage was also approved in South-Carolina (77% in favour with 69% of precincts in) and Tennessee (81% in favour with 49% in).

But keep an eye out on the ban-gay-marriage ballot initiative in Wisconsin. If any of these anti-gay marriage initiatives fails, it should be that one. (At the moment, theres hardly any votes in).

It's not just gay marriage, either. In Arizona, Proposition 103 (English as Official Language) has been called as having passed. (Which might be bad for the several competitive Democratic challengers in that state, if it happened thanks to energized turnout on the part of conservatives.)

But there's also good news!

There are now three states already that have been called as voting for a raise in the minumum wage. And not obviously blue states either: Ohio, Montana and Missouri Smile

Hum, I'm following CNN on TV, and trying to keep up with the details on the web... last info on TV was 89% of precincts reporting in Virginia..

Yeah, that's what it shows in their online results now too.

The numbers I have been quoting come from the Richmond NPR station and are reportedly based on vote totals as tallied by the state election commission (or something like that). Official votes, presumably.
92% of the votes counted in Virginia. 49.86% for Allen (r) and 48.96% for Webb (d).

Well it's been a lull, and I hate to but I need to get to bed soon. Can't wait to wake up in the morning and have everything all decided. (Well, except for the ones that aren't -- like the Virginia one if it's too close for example.) Promising start, really hope things continue in that direction. I don't need a Democratic landslide (though it'd be nice), narrow control or dead even would be fine.

<fingers crossed>

But really even then we have Strickland and Brown and minimum wage and no to slot machines -- all great stuff for Ohio IMO. Kilroy is possible (ooh, latest is 51/49 Pryce, with 92% reporting...) Anyway, fun so far, hope that when I check things out tomorrow morning it'll be even more fun.

G'night...

Yarmuth won, 51% to 48%..

Moreover, in neighbouring, rural, House district 2 in Kentucky, Republican Ron Lewis faces an outside Dem challenger, Mike Weaver.

In the words of the Congressional Quarterly, "Republican Rep. Ron Lewis has dominated this strongly conservative-leaning west-central Kentucky district since he won it in a May 1994 special election [..]. Should Democratic state Rep. Mike Weaver score an upset, it could be a sign of a full-fledged wave that would sweep his party to a sizable majority."

In 2004, Lewis won 68% to 32%.

And yet, at the moment, with 43% of precincts reporting, Lewis is leading just 53% to 47%.

Thats not all. Also in Kentucky, House district 4 was rated as "Leans Republican" and "Leaning Republican" by CQ and NYT.

At the moment, the tally is 48% for incumbent Geoff Davis (REP) and 47% for Ken Lucas (DEM), with 54% of precincts reporting.

Bummer. Both Lewis and Davis have been called as winners of their races.

Lewis is leading 55% to 45% with 76% of precincts in, and Davis is leading 51% to 44%, with 84% of precincts in.

Analyst on TV said it might show that the Dems are winning seats in the blue and purple districts - with the Northup/Yarmuth district described as sort of "a blue city in a red state" - but that the actual red-state districts are holding up.

I'd counter, however, that the three Indiana seats that the Dems won are all districts that voted Bush in '00 and '04, are majority-white, and are classified as "mixed" (rather than urban, suburban or rural) in the NYT map - in a state that as a whole is also reliably Republican - seems to me like those count as "red state America" as well..

Hillary is speeching... not very well, mind you. As random observation, she looks strikingly young. And Bill, hovering behind her, looks very uncomfortable ;-)

Good night, Soz ;-)

Its 4:40 here now, I'll have to go soon too.. wish that there was a little more clarity... things look good and a bunch of good results are already in, but - I'd still like to see some good red state results come in..

(Erg, Hillary desperately needs to learn about applause moments - let people clap you for a bit, rather than shouting over them ..)

95% votes in in VA. 49.67% for Allen (r). 49.13% for Webb (d). 12000 votes separate them.

Democratic challenger Heath Schuler defeated Republican incumbent Taylor in his North Carolina district. Ha! So much for the "red states holding up" theory...

NBC now predicts that the Democrats will get a majority of 231 seats in the House, against 204 for the Republicans.

That would mean a gain of 29 seats for the Democrats.

Meanwhile, I accidentally clicked the "Wyoming results" link - hadnt even thought of looking so far West - but there has been a surprisingly competitive House race there. It pits the bitingly sharp conservative incumbent Barbara Cubin against Democratic challenger Gary Trauner, who has basically come out of nowhere, without national Democratic support.

Well, with 51% of precincts reporting, Trauner is actually leading Cubin 51% to 45% Shocked Very Happy

Nancy Johnson of Connecticut, in congress 24 years, just lost to Democrat Chris Murphy.

There are three Republican congressmen in CT, Dems picking up one was considered mandatory for a House takeover.

Looking good, Gus!

No tsunami (never believed in that), but a handsome victory, bigger than I would have thought, seems in the cards.

Big open question remaining is - whats going to happen with the Senate? Missouri and Montana?
