I am building a 900 Sq ft cabin. I was going to run #2 aluminum service entry wire. Planning and running 100 amp service. Would this wire be adequate and pass inspection for code? The distance of the run to the building is 180 feet.
@Kbrock83,
Rock, one of the hi-tech fellas like Eng, Con, etc will doubtless respond and, no offense, but why haven't you consulted Google
Dale is right. If you type "#2 wire ampacity" into Google, one of the first hits is the "National Electrical Code Allowable Ampacities of Insulated Conductors Rated 0-2000 Volts As Excerpted from the 2002 National Electrical Code. Based on Ampbient Temperature of 30°C (86°F)" provided by USA Wire And Cable Inc.
This seems to suggest that a #2 aluminum wire can carry 100 amps if it is OK for the conductor temperature to rise to 90 C, but size 1/0 would provide a better margin for conductor heating.
However, as with most things electrical, there may be factors that this table does not take into account, that an experienced electrician would know about. Such things might affect the cable choice. Going it alone and making a wrong choice could conceivably 1. Lead to heat or fire damage to your property 2. Invalidate your fire insurance. 3. Trigger legal action against you for code violation.
@contrex,
