Went to see the movie today. If you like Tom Cruise, it's packed with action, but he's put on some age and weight.

@cicerone imposter,
That guy has been a true "has been" and he should emerge completely into his beloved Scientology cult and give it a rest. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed either...

Some of his movies are among my favorites. There are some I didn't like at all. I haven't had a chance to find out about Jack Reacher. I love Born on the Fourth of July, Rainman, and A Few Good Men.

@edgarblythe,
I've read one Reacher book (which? I've no recall of it, except it didn't annoy me at the time, a faint memory of liking it), and seen one Cruise movie, an early one, Top Gun, which I remember as ok, no big deal. On his life choices, oy, but he wouldn't like mine either, religion-wise.

If I run across another Reacher book at good will, I'll buy it.

@edgarblythe,
Tom Cruise has made some very good movies, and I've watched some of them several times like A Few Good Men. I'll still look at his new movies when they come out.

I read the Reacher stories, but don't do movies. I've notice that the most recent one(s) have had a tendency to use the final chapter to rationalize all the unlikely events throughout the book.

just discovered I've never watched a Tom Cruise film all the way through

apparently I've seen portions of quite a few

I did see all of Austin Powers but I don't really think of that as a Tom Cruise movie.

i like the mission impossible movies.

Let's be honest, as an actor he's only slightly better than Nick Cage, and worse than Keanu Reeves.

But of course that is merely my opinion.

@Ticomaya,

he's got the loud breathing technique down to a science, that's for sure...

@edgarblythe,
I thought he was good in Tropic Thunder, playing against type.

I've watched Born on the Fourth of July several times. I have great empathy for his character and the Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

I think Cruise is a gifted actor. Up until he fired his publicist, and his nutty sister suggested he share his couch-vaulting love for Katie Holmes on Oprah, I thought he was a normal guy.

So, he's a nutty fruitcake, but I think a good actor. I'm not an action aficionado; I think I've seen one "Mission: Impossible" on a weak night, no Reachers, never sat through "Risky Business." I thought he delivered in "Rain Man," "Collateral," "Vanilla Sky," "A Few Good Men" -- but I thought he kicked ass in "Magnolia" and "The Last Samurai." He had a bit of a funny turn in "Tropic Thunder."

I don't know why we have to assassinate his work just because we think he's a douche.

@cicerone imposter,
I never found him to be that bad of an actor. But I do know that he has led several films that I enjoyed a lot. And I have to give credit to any actor who supports the sci-fi genre with his "star power" even if not everyone appreciates his acting skill.

I enjoyed "Edge of Tomorrow" a lot, I think it's an underrated scifi film. I also like him in Risky Business, Collateral, Jack Reacher, Tropic Thunder, The Last Samurai, Rain Man, The Color of Money and maybe a few others. Honestly this guy has made a lot of enjoyable movies, and I don't ever remember being distracted by his acting.

@rosborne979,
I also enjoyed the Last Samurai. They filmed some of it New Zealand (the country scene where he found his home), and it has become a tourist attraction.
