there's speculation up heeyuh in the local papers that martinez will be saying adios to the sawx after the playoffs, and benedict-arnoldly joining them NY rankees next year.

it all started after he got shellacked last weekend, and had some bizarre fodder for the press after the game:

"I wish they would **** disappear. Pardon me for using the F-word. I wish they would disappear and never come back. I would probably like to face any other team right now.''

"What can I say, I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy."

Pedro, Mets' GM meet in Dominican Republic
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- Free agent Pedro Martinez met with the general manager of the New York Mets in his home country, a month after helping the Boston Red Sox win their first World Series title since 1918, a baseball source told The Associated Press.

The star pitcher had dinner with Omar Minaya in Santo Domingo on Thursday night, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Yes, the NY Times has been full of this story for days. Something tells me that Pedro will be making a lot of money next year.

The big money may be coming from the Mets. However, if history is any judge, should he sign with the Mets he will be a flop. They seem to have a way of turning champs into chumps.

If recent history is a guide, he'll be mediocre or worse with the Yankees, too. Steinbrenner's ability to sign over-the-hill pitchers and watch them falter is uncanny.

(I'm not saying Pedro is over the hill, except I've a hunch he will be as soon as he puts on the pinstripes...)
