I read that the anticipated loss of votes for Donald Trump will cause a loss of votes for Republican candidates for lower offices.

What's the connection? If my disgust with Trump causes me to vote for Hillary, why would I then change the candidate whom I vote for for lower offices?

@gollum,
Because someone who normally votes Republican but is unhappy with Trump may choose to stay home. Likewise, energized anti Trump voters who might not normally come out could decide to do so this year and vote Democratic for other races as well.

@engineer,
There are also people who will just vote a straight ticket. If their top candidate turns them off, they might jump ship for some of the lower-level candidates as well. Or voters might see some down ticket candidates as being tarred with the same brush.
