Does anyone have any experience with gutter covers/ guards?
Do they work? Are they worth it?
I'm curious. I think gutter guards would save a lot of labor, but Mr. Noddy says they don't work.
I put them on.
I put cheap gutter guards on my house, the ones you can buy from Sears Hardware, they work ok for leaves and twigs, but those Maple seeds drop through them. I have a bunch of Maples and Poplars around my house and would be cleaning the gutters bi-weekly if not for them. You still have to clean them off, but a couple times a year is better than every other week.
I just tore the gutters off. What a stupid invention.
Now I've got a 2 ft deep trench around my house. Gives it a castle-moat look.
We took down the metal guards and put up the cheap plastic netting stuff. It's been up for four years now and still is working great. Total cost $7.00.
I like the plastic mesh--now, to convince Mr. Noddy.
@primergray,
I have tried 2 gutter cover brands now. The first one I tried was Amerimax due to its "snap on" feature. The gutter covers by Amerimax surely were very easy to install that I was able to do it myself despite my lack of experience. However after 2 years, my gutter covers rusted and discolored. What's worse is that the rust spread on my shingles and gutter which caused a lot of damage. I was very disappointed. I am currently using Hallett Gutter Cover now and I have had it for a year now, so far these gutter covers by Hallett are doing a tremendous job. I installed them myself too and they were fairly easy but well, not as easy as Amerimax but very doable. They have not rust yet or whatsoever so I am very hopeful. I will surely update you guys in the near future.
@Surifox,
I haven't tried Amerimax, but I agree with Surifox on Hallett Gutter Cover. I had those installed for 2 years now and they haven't shown any signs of rust build up. As long as the gutter is regularly checked for any issues or potential causes of problems, it will work as expected. It was worth the money for me.
@pompidoi,
I have a long history of gutter covers that went horrible. We have those steel mesh that we bought from home depot. We bought it cheap and they were installed easily. But as time went by, we noticed there were pine needles stuck in the mesh. It clogged our downspout which in turn caused flooding around our house. So, goodbye steel mesh. We also tried our luck on those gutter covers that snaps easily and boy, true to its name, they snapped easily by the test of climate. I might try that gutter cover by Hallet. It sounds sturdy and long lasting.
