when to use 'is it' or'does it'

A student asked me to explain when and why they should use" it's and does' nt " .. he's confused about writing 'does it your pen' or 'is it your pen' .. I have explained which one is correct. .. but im struggling to answer why..

Use does to form a question using a verb, use is for other questions e.g. those using nouns adverbs or adjectives. Does he like beer? Is he married?

Use 'is' for questions involving verbs in gerund form (ending -ing). Is he going out?
