I have a question. When the verb before "as if" is in a past simple, would it be fine to use a past perfect after "as if" to indicate that something happened earlier? For example:
She looked as if she had failed her exam. (and she really had)

It would be fine. Various possibilities exist, e.g. he looked as if he had seen a ghost (common saying to describe shocked appearance). She looked as if she was going to cry. He looked as if he was tired.

So, generally, when the main verb is in the past simple, I can use either past simple or past perfect after "as if" for true or hypothetical situations?
