I have a question. When the verb before "as if" is in a past simple, would it be fine to use a past perfect after "as if" to indicate that something happened earlier? For example:
She looked as if she had failed her exam. (and she really had)
It would be fine. Various possibilities exist, e.g. he looked as if he had seen a ghost (common saying to describe shocked appearance). She looked as if she was going to cry. He looked as if he was tired.
@Tes yeux noirs,
So, generally, when the main verb is in the past simple, I can use either past simple or past perfect after "as if" for true or hypothetical situations?
